S. 89 After reaching over to change the stereo the northbound tanker owned by Glenn Lit-tlefield, Murray and driven by David Boyd Cooper of Salt Lake City, drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic. Mr. Cooper over corrected causing the tire on the right side of the truck to leave the road. He quickly tried to get back on the pavement when the loaded tanker started weaving. The weaving broke the piston, sending the tanker to the right of the highway where it turned one complete roll landing on its right side in the barrow pit. The cab swerved to the left, shooting across the center line and came to rest on the left side of the road on top of the cab, pinning Mr. Cooper between the smashed top and truck seat. The truck seat and steering wheel which were resting heavily upon Mr. Cooper's head had to be removed before he could be taken from the wreck. A coal truck driver, Charles Blackburn, Loa, quickly got on his CB radio and reported the accident and help came within minutes. Investigating officer was Otho Bulkley of the Utah Highway patrol. Cooper was taken to the Garfield Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor burns. |
