Show Surprising Bobcats Take Third In Region Eight Basketball Tourney The old Milford-Beaver rivalry remained at a high pitch, as the crowd roared to the final minutes when the Tigers put it on ice to claim the Region Eight Class A title at St. George, Saturday. Ray Englestead's Panguitch Bobcats finished ninth out of 10 places in the region standing, but someone forgot to tell the Bobcats of their losing record, as they racked up tourney victories over seventh-place Valley, sixth-place Piute and fourth-placed Bryce valley to win a consolation title and a state tournament berth. The bobcats stymied tourney opponents with a slow, deliberate offense and well-disciplined defense, and their effort in the 62-57 win over Bryce Valley Saturday was no exception. In Friday game, Panguitch freshman, Kevin Frandsen, will long remember his winning basket as the young Bobcat let loose with a short jumper that fell through as the buzzer sounded to give Panguitch its upset over rival Piute. Valleys chances suffered a jolt Thursday as Panguitch soared past them with a 57-38 win. High scorers for the Panguitch team for the three days were freshman Jeff Owens with 23 and 18 for the first two games and Gary Church and Gary Owens with 14 each for the final game. Bryce Valley had an eight point lead in the final quarter. Escalante whittled away at this lead until Moqui Johnny Alvey tied it at 68-all with 15 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Field goals from Escalante's Gary Liston and Mustang, Lynn Chynoweth left the game in a tie at 70-all In the overtime as Lyman missed four straight foul shots then redeemed himself with the winning basket. Dal Liston was high scorer for Escalante with 20 points. Vern Mclnnelly with 19 and Martin Ramsey; spark -plug for the- Mustangs, rammed through 22 points and pulled down numerous rebounds. Milford used the fourth Quarter to break away from stubborn Escalante Friday for their win. Lynn Mclnelly hit 17 and Dal Liston 12 for the Moquis and Jim Raines, Garland Tail and Kevin Barnes scored 24, 18 and 16 for the Tigers. Named to the Class 1-A all-tournament team were Jim Raines and Kevin Barnes, both Milford; Rusell Albrecht and Gary Gillins, both Beaver; Dal Liston, Escalante; Kit James and Greg Glazier, both Kanab; Martin Ramsey, Bryce Valley. Jeff Owens, Panguitch and Mike Dalton, Piute. |
