Show State Senate Approves Pre-Pay ment Of Sales Tax For Kaiparowits Road An energy development bill calling for approval of Kaiparowits development companies to pre-pay sales tax on purchases for developing the multi-million dollar electric generating system, passed the Utah State Senate Wednesday afternoon and is expected to head for House action this week. Sen. Dixie Leavitt (R-Cedar) told the Garfield County News that the bill received a unanimous vote in the Senate and if passed by the House, will give clear sailing for construction of a highway from Cannonvllle south to Glen Canyon City, as well as for providing funds for special service districts for hospitals, water systems, sewer and fire protection. Basically, the measure allows the Kaiparowits developers to pre-pay the state between $35 and $40-million dollars, the amount expected they will pay in sales tax for goods and services in the state. This will allow the basic programs to get underway immediately with their funds, as the state docs not have sufficient money to move into such project at this time. Leavitt also said that all indication of preference, as to the Kaiparowits plant site selection, has been removed from his Energy Development Resolution, lie said that the resolution was chiefly drawn up by the consortium of Kaiparowits developers. He said that he deemed the change necessary because of difference of opinion on the issue of site selection between the people in Kane and Garfield counties He stated that the resolution will now ask that the Interior Department make a speedy decision for the plant site to provide early construction. Some $6,000,000 a month is being lost by the developers as the delay continues, he said. |
