Forest Supplies A Major Industry And One Of Its Biggest Payrolls For Garfield County Dixie National Forest timber stands provide about twenty-five million board feet of timber each year for Garfield County sawmills. The timber industry provides the largest employment in the county. The Forest Ranger designates the trees to be cut, using proved management practices which assure continuous and maximum growth for the remaining trees. New seedlings are planted where needed to insure lumber and other forest products for future generations. Approximately 450,000 seedlings are r -nted annual ly on the Dixie National Forest. The timber stands are managed under the principles of multiple use management. Under multiple use management all resources can benefit from timber cutting. An example of benefits derived from timber harvest would be Improved watershed through soil stabilization methods, improved wildlife habitat by providing tho needed "margin" area helpful to wildlife, Improved or additional roads to provide access, and improved timber stands by harvesting diseased and over mature trees. The Dixie National Forest has many different species of trees valuable for Umber. Trees vary from the Engleman Spruce forests of the Aquarius to the Ponderosa Pine of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Other trees found on the Dixie National Forest include Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir, White Fir, Limber Pine, Brlstlecone Pine, and Aspen. The forests not only provide the trees for our industry, but are also important for wildlife, a watershed, and a place for year-long family recreation. |
