Show COUNTY AGENTS NOTE By Harold Lindsay Many of you folks are try-lng to get rid of the pest called "Quack Grass". This is called other names as Devil grass, Johnson grass and crabb grass. I would like to explain that It Is not the same grass. Many of you have asked if the chemical preparations which are advertised to control Crab grass will control quack grass. No they will not, so don't waste your money on them. Quack grass Is a perenlal which grows from the roots as well as from seed. The crab grass is an .annual that starts from seed each year. Crab grass , seed won't germinate unless the soil temperature gets to at least 80 degrees. That is why we don't have Crab Grass in Panguitch. To control quack grass, I suggest, you pray with 5 tablespoons of Amino-triazol or Weedazol to 1 gallon of water. This will cover about 1 square rod of grass. After the grass turns brown or a purple-like color in about 14 days, spade up the area, and let it stand for 10 days. After this, you can replant if desired. If some re growth occurs later this summer, spray again, wait until the grass gets 4-6 Inches high before you spray. Be careful of plants you don't want to kilL We have a mimeographed sheet on "Quack Grass Control" which you can get by calling our office. This chemical will control grass in irrigation ditches. You may try some this year In view of the fact we will have to conserve our water. |
