Show LETTER FROM THE LEGISLATURE By Nethelln Griffin O Friends: I hope this reaches the editor's desk before the paper goes to press. I waited until today s o that I'd know what to say, but I still don't know. The Boulder road has had some rough going this week and still' isn't over the rocks. As you probably know, thq state road commission isn't functioning exactly unanimously these days. Two members and others of the staff said certainly that our road would go on the list. But when chairman Burton heard of it, ho raised strong objections. Mayor Bill Bruhn, Senator Royal Harward, Representative Clarence Al-brecht, and I met today with Commissioners Burton, Bott, and Mr. Ander-so( the engineer). They seemed about ready to comply with our request. However, we are to ask C, . J. Olsen of the U.S. Forest ' office at Ogden to come down for another meeting to assure the state men that the Forest Service' will not withdraw from their part of the road work. Representative S'c o 1 1 Smith told mo this morning that someone in Cir-cleville is saying that I am opposing the $5,100 per classroom unit school bill. This is not true. I am supporting it, because it provides" the maxlmunrequal-ization feature, along with the greatest amount o f money for our schools. There is .talk that we may have to compromise at a somewhat lower figure. However that may be, I will never compromise on the equalization feature. The principle of equalization has seen too long and tio hard a fight for us to back down now. I am also actively supporting the bill which will add one cent to the gasoline tax The highways will certainly need something to offset provisions of three other bills (all likely to pass). One of these1 gives more money to Class C roads, one remoyes the" tax from gasoline used off the highways, and I forget what the other is. The state will need additional money this biennlum to match federal funds.. Mayor Bruhn was at the Capitol today partially to explain to me a bill he asked me to sponsor which is aimed to relieve cities and towns of the provision in an irrigation law stipulating acreage as the only basis for distribution. The town of Panguitch Js con siderlng taking over the work of. distributing wa-. ter belonging to their com pany in which rights are on a sha're basis. Anyway, -it Is felt that water cannot be distributed equably to . users on both small garden plots and farm .fields on an acreage basis., I have been asked to speak at a meeting of The Council of Women ..Legis- lators. Maybe you can guess what I will talk about. It won't be legislation. They can read their papers-for that. I'll tell them about Garfield County scenery. Someone Introduced me at a dinner the other" night saying that .lwa&. from Boulder, "which is a nice place if you can get there." |
