Show PRESIDENT WINDER DEAD. First Counselor to President of Mormon Mor-mon Church Succumbs to Pneumonia. Salt Lake City. John It. Winder, ' first counselor to President Joseph F. 1 Smith of tho Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at 7:30 o'clock Sundny night. Although the end came sudden'y and unexpectedly, the venerable man, of the ago of 89 years, was In full possession of his faculties. Ills wife and son, John R. Winder, Jr., were at his bedsido when ho peacefully passed away. While Mr. Winder had been suffering suffer-ing from a lingering attack' of acute L pneumonia for more than two months, his physical strength and wonderful '," ' mentality several times threw off tho malady. It recurred, however, and, despite his patient suffering and courage, cour-age, the disease became the master, and tho man who for moro than hnlt a century has been so eminently prominent In tho upbuilding of tho Mormon church and Salt Lake City succumbed. President Winder was born at Bid-s Bid-s donden, Kent, England, on December 11, 1821. Ho entered the Mormon church In 1818, coming across tho plains to Utah In 1853. Tho life of President Winder was one of strenuous activity and replcto with stirring deeds and events. Bishop Winder was married four times and is survived by his latest wife, Mario (Burnham) Winder. Ho was tho father of twenty-three children. |
