H Natural Gas Combustion Assigned as the Cause, the Force of Explosion H Being Terrific All of the Men Killed Were Foreigners. Seattle, Wash. Two explosions, oc-I oc-I currlng within ti few minutes of each other, shortly boforo 7 o'clock Sunday I morning, resulted in tho death of H twelvo men, in tho Lawson mine at I Dlack Diamond, thirty miles southeast of Seattle. Seven men going down on Bhlft and five men coming up wero iaught between tho first and sixth levels, lev-els, and It Is almost certain that all perished. Natural gas combustion Is assigned as tho cause. All tho men were foreigners. Tho forco of tho explosions was terrific, ter-rific, Bhowers of earth, timbers and bits of clothing, believed to bo that of tho minors, being blown from tho slope of tho mine. Timbers measuring sixteen inches thick and eight loot long wero blown hnlf a milo. A big Bectlon of stenmplpo mis blown a similar sim-ilar distance and sank fifteen feet In tho ground. Tho shock of tho explosion, explo-sion, which was felt for miles around, was so great that many thought there had been an earthquake. Soon after tho explosion tho mine bogan to cavo In, Indicating that all tho supports had been blown out and tho tunnels wrecked. It 13 doubtful if tho mine will bo reopened. Tho dam-igo dam-igo Is estimated at $250,000. |
