This city experienced two terrific enrthquakes at about half past 7 o'clock Thursday morning, July 1, which were uccompnnied by roaring sounds and aro Imld to have had n stronger and more undulatory move, ment than the one last December which destroyed Messina and other cities, laid waste many vlllnges In Calabria and killed 200,000 persons. Although the shocks Thursday had no such terrible consequences, the 25,-000 25,-000 residents of Jthe city were thrown into terror. They ran Into the streets panic-stricken, and nearly tho entire population Is encamped In the open places, rearing to return to tho struc turos which nave served them ns homes since the city was destroyed. The broken wnlls or tho old ruins were thrown to the ground and Messina Mes-sina was for a few minutes smothered smoth-ered In a cloud of dust. The casualties were row and the only persons killed, so 'rar as Is known, were a young woman and her Infant. Tho woman had come here only n few days ago and had settled in rooms which tne great earthquake had left relatively undamaged. She was standing at tho door when tho shock occurred nnd rushed Inside to save her child. Before she could escape rrom the room the second shock threw down tho walls, burying both mother and child under the stairs. Several persons' woro struck by de Inched stones, but so rar as Is known no ono was ratally Injured. All commerce censed In tho city and tho places or business along tho sea front were closed. As a result sov-eral sov-eral thousand workmen woro Idle nnd special precautions are being taken to nrovent disorder. Regglo suffered almost as severe a shock as Messina, but no casunltlos have been reported nt that place. According Ac-cording to the reports the effect of tho earthquake was practically tho same as at Messina. The seismic disturb ances was felt nt Taormina. but no damage was done there. Within twenty-four hours the shocks at Mes-slnn Mes-slnn numbered twenty-threo. |
