Show AN INGENIOUS NEW AIR BOX FOR STOVES New Device Invented by Woman for the Better Control of the Draft. In the accompanying engraving is Illustrated a novel device which Is applicable ap-plicable to ranges, stoves and open grates, and which alms to provide a better control of tho draft ihan has heretofore been possible, thus effecting a saving in fuel. The device has tho form of a box, smaller nt tho ton than at the bottom. The rear of the box Is left open, while tho other thrco sides are formed of Inclined walls provided with long vertical apertures. Tho bottom bot-tom of the box Is provided with n sliding slid-ing plate, the purpose of which will be presently explained. Tho air box, us the device Is termed, Is placed on the grate of a stove, to which It I secured by means ot bolts. It thus takes up most of the space usually occupied by the fue,U. Tho rear of tho air box fits closely against tho rear wall of the firebox, but n nnrrow space is left on tho other thrco sides to receive tho fuel. By this means tho area of tho Ore Is greatly Increased, whllo the fepth Is reduced. Air passes up from ho grato Into the box nnd thence through the apertures to the'flro. Tho plato at tho bottom of the air box serves as a damper which enn be moved In or out to control the amount of air fed to tho fire. Owing to tho shallowness of tho fire nnd tho gonernf distribution of air a perfect combustion combus-tion of tho fuel" Is assured. In proof of tho valuo of the nlr box It Is pointed NEW A1U iiOX FOIl KTOVKtf. out by tho Scientific American hnt thoro Is a material reduction In tho amount of smoko from n stove supplied sup-plied with this device. Tho inventor of tho nlr box Is n Now Zealand woman, wom-an, Miss B. J. Mouat. |
