Colored Soldiers Objected to Search Being Made Among Their Ranks For Accused Criminal, and Fired Several Volleys at Citizens. Brownsville, Tex. Evidently angered an-gered becauso of a search made among their ranks In an effort to apprehend ap-prehend a negro who attacked Mrs. Leon Evans at her homo here, and who sho asserted was a negro soldier, members of a battalion of negro federal fed-eral troops stationed at Fort Brown, near here, entered Brownsvlllo on Tuesday, beenmo unruly and fired sovcrnl sov-crnl volleys down Main street. As a result Frank Natus, a barkeeper, Is dead, a bullet from a Krag-Jorgcnscn rlflo having pierced his heart, and Policeman Po-liceman Domingo is wounded, his arm and hand shattered by a bullet, ana his horso shot from under hlui. Twen-ty-threo of tho bullots fired entered tho home ot Louis R. Cowan, many went through the resldenco of F. E. Stark, and soveral bricks wero shot from the walls of the Miller hotel, near a window whero guests, wero Bleeping. After their depredations the negroes returned to tbclr. garrison. Representations have been mado to tho governor and a request that the negroes bo rcmov'cd Immediately to avoid further trouble. |
