Show LET JUSTICE PREVAIL senate bill no 2 introduced by senator john W peters at the very beginning of 0 the present session of 0 the legislature passed the senate with but one dissenting vote this bill it will be recalled provides for a reapportionment of the legislative representation resen tation in order that all of 0 the counties ot of the state may be justly represented in the state law making body box elder which has been united with toodie tooele county since statehood in making up the fir first senatorial district Is one of 0 the counties to receive justice under this measure under the provisions of 0 this bill box elder county will get one senator and two representatives and several other counties will aft additional representation resen tation among is salt lake but because the bill would give salt lake county more sen senators alors and representatives enta tives the population ot of that county justifying such action a number dt the lawmakers from the cow counties have sworn to kill the measure and thus not only deprive the most populous county in the state ot of its rights but campel co ampel box elder county to continue under the present intolerable conditions conditions the attitude lot ot these certain legislatures Is that it if they give more representation to salt lake that county may or can control the lawmaking body entirely and the cow counties would be at the mercy of 0 the big count county y every time the legislature Is la in session that Is a pretty tar far fetched fear ear tor for the representatives ot of the big county could no more be tie de bonded upon to vote as a unit than hiie he entire body of the two houses and it the big county Is entitled to more rep resen tation by reason ot of its population then it should have it we ot of this county are very much concerned about the representation which our county ought to have and because we have lived under an tor for these many years we can appreciate the feelings of other counties which ask only tor for that which they are entitled to have A recent editorial in the tribune had the following to say on this subject the legislative reapportionment bill introduced by senator peters at the beginning of 0 the present session of 0 the legislature had passed the senate with only one dissenting vote under the terms ol of this measure salt lake county receives substantial recognition not all to which it Is entitled but enough to satisfy the ends of 0 justice in some respects the constitution provides tor for legislative reapportionment lafter after each state and federal census but up until the present time this provision ot of the organic law has hag been disregarded by successive legislatures the bill ot of senator peters Is now before the house of 0 representatives according to reports from the state capitol in an attempt will be made to emasculate it by amendment it is to be hoped these reports aro are unfounded tor for such action would plainly show a disposition upon the part of some ot of the legislators to discriminate against this county the citizens of 0 which pay the greater part ol of the taxes collected by the state As the peters bill does not provide tor for the full representation in the legislature to which the county Is entitled by reason ot of increased population it would be wrong tor for the members ot of the house hous to reduce the number ot of senators and representatives proposed by the majority leader in the upper chamber let right and justice prevail |
