Show THE NKW. CONSTITUTION. While other papers are full of suggestions sug-gestions to the convention on the kird of constitution they think best for Utah, The Dispatch, while it don't beliee the convention will in the least be guided Ly its views, yet nevertheless makes bold to say what it does not want to see in the constition. In the firBt place we, being democratic to the boot heels, do not want to see any provision in the fundamental law of J the new state inviting or encouraging sumptuary legislation of any kind. In the matter of prohibition it is not nec-1 essary to eay that we have never been in favor ot political prohibition.because we ! were born a lemocrat, educated a democrat, have always associated with democrats, are a democrat from conviction con-viction and hope to die in full fellowship fellow-ship with the men who are striving to live up to arjd act with those whoa e political faith is well and deeply laid upon tbe deathless principles taught by that grand friindtf liberty, Jefferson that well -nigh: faultless friend of the people and we are of coarse opposed to political prohibition, while we hate drunkenness atd intemperance in all their forms and aspects with a deadly hatred. Xo true, well-informed or well grounded democrat can favor sumptuary sumptu-ary le eislation of any kind or upon any subject. Then, too, we fear if a section is incorporated permitting a prohibition prohibi-tion law that the new constitution will j not be ratified by the intelligent people peo-ple of Utah who believe that they can regulate and control by the assistance of the church and their own sense of right, any undue appetite they may have at times for strong drink. We would not see another undemocratic undemo-cratic doctrine recognized in that doc- j ument, and that is the bounty section. We would not see the legislature authorized au-thorized to pass a law levying a tax upon the poor and the rich, the laborer, la-borer, the widow and the man in debt, to help out a badly projected public enterprise which finds itself unable to make buckle and tongue meet, for any cause whatever. It is undemocratic to give thiB power to any body of men. It fosters ana gives aid and comfort to monopolies, and the democratic party founded by Jefferson is bitterly opposed op-posed to fostering or feeding monopolies, monopo-lies, manufacturing or any other favored fa-vored class in the government. Let tliOBe help start these enterprise! who will, but don't let us force anybody to do it. That doctrine iB pure democracy, democ-racy, as much so as is anti-prohibition, A bounty provision is a sumptuary provision and while this is true we do not oppose it only on that ground, but we fear If it is projected it wlli help to defeat the adoption cf the new consti tution and add that much more objec-tioa objec-tioa to it. We want etatehood and the defeat of the constitution would also prove the defeat of statehood. There is another principle in contemplation contem-plation which we wish to state fairly, truthfully and temperately. It is the proposition to incorporate a provision calling for equal suffrage. We do not oppose this doctrine because we do not think the ladies worthy of the franchise. Far be it from us, but we do oppose it for the reason that we think the ladies too good, too pure and too necessary at home to have the inclination, the time or the wish to eater the arena with men to struggle for political mastery, or even political equality, in her home or about her vromanly pursuits and following her womanly inclinations, a spirit of flight is she, but when Bhe sinks to man's le?el 6he is well no better than man. As she is now she is a divinity which Ehapes our ends, rough hew them as re may, then she would be of us and would ljse the beneficent power to guide which she now sways so forcibly and yeU benignantly. We have another an-other reason and that is, it is undem- Iocratic. Democracy teaches that there shall ba no favored classes, no favored i ndividuals, but that all citizens shall phare and share alike. Well, when war's dreai alarm sounds, male citizens citi-zens are forced to shoulder a musket and go to war, and there is no man who would tolerate for a moment the idea that female citizens must go t3 bat tie as the male citizen does. If the didn't go, she would be favored end that would be undemocratic and iTong. It is all folly to talk about yoman going so far as to influence the rote at the polls. Over in Colorado IFhe had the franchise but an hour ere she was in the arena struggling with tte men for offices, and she got some of them too. If she makes it profitable, h:!ds office and Bhares honors, she 3 rr.ust share risks, damages and hard ships as well. She can't do it. Man-tood Man-tood will not permit it, and if she dont the belongs to a favored class of citizenship citi-zenship and that is not democratic. These are only a few, a very few of c or objections, but are they not enough ? Then, too, as with the other objections we have named, we fear that if thisjeec-tion thisjeec-tion is adopted in the constitution it will increase the danger of defeat and also help to make it Impossible to ratify tbe constitution and thus contribute to the defeat of etatehood. i We heartily approve of the Deseret J News' terse and-to-the-point remarks anent a resolution offered in the legislature legis-lature of Colorado a few days since. Here is the resolution referred to : Committee on state affairs recommends recom-mends that the bill be Indefinitely postponed post-poned for the reason that the committee commit-tee deems it a blow at individual liberty. lib-erty. .Such a request by a crowd of men, who admit that medicine is not a science and diagnosis is nothing more than gueesing, is, so to speak, simply monumental impudence, ana" the bill, if enacted into law, would result in tyranny by a erowd of allopathic allo-pathic czars and would be a lasting disgrace to the state. The law we now have is sufficiently idiotic to suit the committee. Evidently the bill referred to in the resolution was something against others than the allopathic school of medicine. The News condemns the bill and sustains the resolution. Now we are opposed to all laws which restrict re-strict or curtail the privileges of the citizen in anyway. If we want a hsruoepathic, an eclectic- or any other sort of a doctor, or want a "quack" who is to say no! Let the allopathies allo-pathies alone awhile and we'll soon have a law forcing us to send for an allopathic physician in three minutes after a child takes sick with any disease, dis-ease, under the penalty that it it dies we may be prosecuted for murder. All sumptuary laws are tyrannical. |
