The first business transacted by the city council last nigtit was the reading of the resignation of JuBtice E. A. Wedcwood. The resignation was ac-I ac-I cepted. Thomas John asked by letter to be appointed to the vacancy. Laid on the table. Airs. Catherine Bowen represented that her property had been sold for taxes because of the fact that her tax notice had been mailed in error to Richfield. The tax and costs amount to $7.00. She asked that this be re mitted. Her petition was referred to the committee on finance. L. C. Duggins' retail liquor license was renewed, $300.00 having been paid into the treasury. Mrs. J. A. Milner asked that the costs of tax sale of her property be remitted. re-mitted. Referred. Street Supervisor Allred asked for-a new wagon. Referred to committee on streets and alleys. A list of water taxes due from indigent indi-gent persons, amounting to $20.10 was presented by Mr Allred aa water master. mas-ter. The amount was remitted and the watermaeter'a account credited with thai amount. The officer requested re-quested that the following be remitted, but his request was not granted: H. L. Kinnison, water not used, 50 cents; Soren Jensen ditto and property sold, $3.00; Provo Grocery company, water not used, $2.00; John Burbeck, ditto 75 cents; Helen Barman, widow, $1.00: B. M. Roberts estate, $2.00 ; total $9.25. Justice W?dgvood's report of cases filed and tried in February was read and accepted. McEwan from the special committee com-mittee reported favorably upon the proposition to break up and plant to lucern, twenty acres more or less of the land upon which the old peBt house stood. The cost will be about $200.00 including grubbing, plowing, planting, eeed and ditch making. The report was adopted. The election of a Justice of the peace was next taken up. John E. Booth was elected by the council to the office. The city sprinkling wagon was ordered to be painted. A ienghty letter from the mayor recommended re-commended that the water mains bs extended to the cemetery. The subject was referred to the committee on cemetery and waterworks, jointly. Claims were allowed as follows; Salaries $497.85; board of prisoners $11.56; committee work, $10.80; the Inquirer company $22.25; rant of es-tray es-tray pen three years, to B. Y. academy, $y0.00; other sundry claims, $20.30. Hyrum Jensen, again asked that the box carrying water across his property on Third street between J and K be repaired. re-paired. Referred. D. P. Felt reported that all complications compli-cations as to title, etc., of the Pearl Ewing estate has been cleared away, and asked that $10.42 taxes and costs of tax sales be remitted. remit-ted. Referred. City Watermaster Allred presented his schedule and water rates for 1895 were fixed as follows. City lots J1.0J; farming lands, 50 cents per acre; fractions, frac-tions, pro rata; Provo Woolen Mills company, $250 00; Excelsior Roller mills; $100.00 ;01d Hoover mills, $50.00; Sun Foundry, $40.00. A. O. Smoot, $140.00; E. J. Ward & Sons, $60.00; Hans Poulson, $10 00. Couucil adjourned till Monday evening, even-ing, March 18th at 7 o'clock when objections ob-jections to the assessment of a local tax for Macadamizing purposes will be heard. |
