An accident occurred this morning at the Ilacken-sack Ilacken-sack bridge on the Delaware, Lackawanna Lacka-wanna & Western road, near Jersey j City. Two passenger trains collided with fatal result. The collision was between the Dover and Orange express ex-press trains and was caused by fog. Two cars were telescoped. The j)over express left Roseville at 8 a. m., followed four minutes later by the regular commutation train. Approaching Ap-proaching the Hackensack bridge the engineer of the express s'owed up, the fog preventing him from seeing the signals. The train following did not slow up and crashed into the rear of the express, completely wrecking the last two cars, both full of passengers, who were crushed to death or terribly mangled. The engineer of the commutation commu-tation train is missing. He is supposed sup-posed to be among the killed. A passenger pas-senger of one of the trains who reached bere savs he counted fifteen dead bodies alongside the wreck and others are thought, to be killed. The most authentic account shows nine were killed, while the injured number thirly-Beven. HOT WHILE IT LASTED. Rio, Jan. 15. Engagement between the rebel vessel Guanabara, supported by the guns of Cobras Island, on Saturday, Satur-day, and the government positions along the shore, were very hot while it lasted. The Guanabara had the best of the fight, running close inshore and making mak-ing yery effective use of her guns, which caused the government forces to retire from their positions, leaving a number of dead and wounded behind, Peixoto's officers while the Guanabara was within easy distance of the shore, suddenly made an atta-k upon her by means of a number of .mail boats filled with troops, but this movement was unsuccessful, as the Guanabara opened such a deadly fire that she easily beat off the boarding parties, killing a number of soldiers who manned the small craft. It is difficult to get at the facts in regard to number of killed and wounded The rebels claim, that at least a hundred of Peixoto's troops were killed or wounded during the attack upon the Guanabara r by the small boats, a ; r.d probably as many more during the rebel shio's attack at-tack upon the land ba Series. On the other hand the reports! say the losses are trivial and the insur ents report the number of killed andvc unded is grossly e xagg eratt d J |
