In Sunday morning's Dispatch a telegram tel-egram appeared, sent from Salt Lake, purporting to give the result of the Clove fornication case. When we read the telegram, we were pleased to believe be-lieve what it stated, that Mr. Clove had cleared himself of the odious charge that was brought against him. We were surprised, however, on reading a personal letter written by Mr. C. S. Varian, United States Prosecuting Attorney At-torney , and published in the Salt Lake Tribune on Sunday morning. Out of justice to our many readers, we feel it our duty to publish toe same, that the public may know of the facts of the case: "Mr. James Clove, associate editor of the Provo Enquirer, was arrested by United States Marshal Parsons yesterday yester-day on a charge of fornication. It was said to be a blackmailing scheme, instituted insti-tuted by political enemies of the accused. ac-cused. It was reported on good authority au-thority this afternoon that the case had been dropped." News. The above appears in the Neus of last evening. Permit me to say that Jarnes Clove, editor of the Enquirer, seduced se-duced a girl undr promise of irarriage while she was an inmate of the family and under the protection of John C. Graham. He was arreste J, and alter a thorough investigation of the facts under un-der my direction by a deputy specially-selected specially-selected for the purpose. Marshal Parsons knew nothing of it. I had undertaken un-dertaken for the sake of the girl and her unborn child to keep the matter from the press. If the News thinks there is any blackmail in the business I can convince it to the contrary by unobjectionable un-objectionable evidence. "Clove married the girl and paid the costs this afternoon. -C. S. Varian, "United States Attorney." |
