Show THE RIGHT KIND OF TALK. On Wednesday next the members of t lie Territorial Central Committee of the People's Party will hold a very important session in Salt Lake City. The call for "tliis meeting is published in another column. The question to bo determined is whether it is policy to disband the People's party, and from henceforth fight the political battels of this Territory on national lines. The Herald, in reviewing the proposition, very sensibly says: The masses are emphatically in favor fa-vor of the prompt disbandment of the People's party. They realize that there is no longer occasion for the continuance continu-ance of the party, and that to hold it together longer would be almost a crime against the community. We say this advisedly, because we are familiar fa-miliar with the views of scores of those People's partisans who have been influential in-fluential among the voters in the past. These gentlemen tell us that the great majority of those who have trained under the People's banner feel that there is no longer a place for the party, and that to perpetuate the organisation or-ganisation would be to waste energy and effort, and put to bad use political force which might otherwise be diverted di-verted to good purpose. The leaven which began working a year ago has penetrated and permeated the-ranks of the People's Party, and now the overwhelming majority are keen to range themselves with the great nat'al organizations and conduct the; lolitical battles on the lines whi-N. ; :e recognized throughout the UnL n The voters have come .to ful1" ' iderstand the truth, that so lor ts Uiy contest as nondescripts in pol ""s il v will be treated by the peOj :. o' erica as undeserving con- sideraU" i unworthy of participation in ti t vo.itx '1 councils and affairs of the ni l. "i. it has been a tiresome, i profiti'j w 'rfare in the past, and to ! procetv with it on the old lines would lie dis.'Pti -us to t lie voters themselves. Furthtrare, it is not probable thnt the party car. be held together. The Democracy is but a few days old, and ahead) it has enrolled in its ranks hundreds of men who have in the past given their allegiance to t lie People's party. Everywhere that a Democratic meeting is held People's partisans Hock in and wisely and enthusiastically enthusiasti-cally declnre themselves in favor of the organization and its principles. This is true not only of Salt Lake City, but of the entire Territory, stront clubs being alreadv formed in several counties. At the Republican meeting in the theatre last week, we also saw-that saw-that there was something of a going over to that party by the People, i Happily this was not" great, though there was enough of it to show that there is a prevalent feeling in 'the party that the organization should go out of existence. If the central committees com-mittees will take careful and intelligent intelli-gent account of the situation they will see that there is no longer the least occasion for maintaining the People's Party, and they will declare the organization organ-ization disbanded, the members being free to unite with f.uch parties as best represent ther principles. Everything Every-thing is to be gained by this course; everything is to be lost by pursuing the opposite course. Evidence has been presented that never again can either the People's or the Liberal I'arty be a forceful factor in local politics," pol-itics," and now it will be the part of wisdom for the leaders of those parties to confess the truth and not stand in the way of the progressive movement which has been inaugurated. |
