Show Helpmeets In More Than Name. The Rev. Matt S. Hughes of Portland, the pastor of the Chestnut Street church, has the reputation of being the most eloquent elo-quent preacher of his church in Maine, and is always in demand as a speaker on all sorts of occasions, from a dinner given by the drummers to the annual banquet of those who cling to the old idea that Robert Burns was a real poet, even if he didn't belong to the modern achool. Mr. Hughes is a believer in woman suffrage, suf-frage, and with right good reason, for his wife is one of the leaders of the movement move-ment in this state, and is like her husband, hus-band, a ready and accomplished speaker. Thursday Mr. Hughes was to have addressed ad-dressed the Children's Christmas club, but was unable to be present, and Mrs. Hughes took his place, and it is wafted up here that some of the children thought she spoke better than he would if he had been present. Mrs. Hughes is not the only woman in Portland who is able to take the place of her husband as a public speaker. The Rev. Samuel F. Pearson is very sick, and Mrs. Pearson, in addition to watching over him, has taken charge of his work and is doing what she can to ,fill his place. Sunday she spoke twice, 'and in the evening the hall was simply packed. Mrs. Pearson has for years been her husband's hus-band's best assistant and is thoroughly informed regarding every feature of his work. She is an easy speaker and has long been regarded by the people for whom they have labored as a partner with her husband in the ministry. Lewifiton (Me.) Journal. |
