Show WAS THOMAS JEFFERSON A PROTECTIONIST PRO-TECTIONIST V Mr. Jefferson, in a letter to Benjamin Benja-min Austin, dated Montecello, January Janu-ary 9, 1816, says: 'A commerce which offered the. raw material in exchange for the same material after receiving tho last touch of industrv was worthy of welcome to all nations. It was expected ex-pected that those especially to whom inauufacturit g industry was important, import-ant, would cherish the frieudship of such customers by every favor and particularly cultivate their peace by every act of justice and friendship." Mr. Jefferson further spoke of this theory as "furnishing an occupation of the ocean." JdFFEUSON's FIRST ANNUAL MESSAGE, DECEMBER, 1801. - Agriculture manufactures, com merce and navigation, the four pillars of our prospprily, are the most thriving thriv-ing when left viost fee to indiiidual eeterprise. Protection from casual embarrassments, em-barrassments, however, may sometimes some-times be reasonab'y interposed. If, in the course of your observations or inquiries, in-quiries, they should appear to need any aid within the limitB of our constitutional con-stitutional powers, your sensa of their importance is a sufficient assurance they will occupy your attention. JEFFERSON'S EIGHTH. ANNUAL MESSAGE, MES-SAGE, NOVEMBER 8, 1808. The suspension of our foreign commerce, com-merce, produced by the injustice of the belligerent powers, and the consequent conse-quent losses and sacrifices of our citizens, citi-zens, are subjects of juBt concern. The situation into which we hayethus been forced has impelled us to apply a portion por-tion of our industry and capital to internal in-ternal manufactures and improvements. improve-ments. The extent of this conversion is daily increasing, and little doubt remains re-mains that the establishment formed and forming will, under the auspices of cheapsr materials and subsistence, the freedom of labor from taxation with us, and of protectirg dutieB and prohibitions, become permanent. Whatever crumbs of comfort protectionists protec-tionists can find in the forgoing they are entirely welcome to. And it should be borne in mind that Jefferson liyed in a day when, if ever, American industries in-dustries needed assistance. If Jefferson Jeffer-son were alive today be would say, as all democrats and many republicans say to the pap-fed millionaires, "Hold, enough!" |
