Show Schools Thursday, November 25, 2010 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 5 When giving thanks don't forget your favorite teacher At Thanksgiving, we often pause to count our blessings. While we're at it, let's not forget to thank our favorite teachers. "I can think of no better way to do so than to nominate them for an Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award," said Wess Sorensen, general manager of Skyline Mine. "There are five awards available, and in addition to some well-deserved recognition, each recipient gets $3,500. "It's good to be thankful for our teachers, but even better to reward them and let many others know the quality of their efforts, too," Sorensen added. Classroom teachers in Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties are eligible an anse uninson a ey azette The annual Reflections contest was held recently by the PTA at Gunnison Elementary School. SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION Two seniors from Gunnison Valley High School recently attended the United States Senate Youth Program. Tyrell Crane and Heidi Sorensen were selected by a committee from the high school to serve as delegates at the annual scholarship convention held at the Utah Law and Bar Association Building in Salt Lake City. The competition required Tyrell and Heidi to assemble a 20-page portfolio illustrating their academic, leadership, extra-curricular, and community service involvement. The event consisted of a written essay on how stu- dents exhibit leadership and political principles in their high schools and communities, a round table discussion on current political events, an extemporaneous speech, and a test on government positions and processes. This event allows students to network with others who share their passion for debate and government functions. Winners from this competition receive an expensepaid trip to Washington D.C. and a $5,000 tuition scholarship, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. for the awards program.
