Show Thursday, November 25, 2010 The Gunnison Valley Gazette A Thanksgiving story Weddings "A Christmas Story" become a Christmas classic for so many of us? I don't know about you, but I can relate to at least 80% of the experiences depicted in the show. The remaining 20% are completely chronicled in National Lampoon's "A Christmas Vacation." One of the more recent "Lampoon" moments took place a couple of years ago and involved Christmas tree harvesting and family members from Las Vegas. I know I could just stop there because your imagination is able to fill in the rest of the story well enough to give you a chuckle, but since this article is a stand-alone, and not a series of episodes, let me indulge. While one brother-in-law was in the middle of reloading the 12-gauge shotgun, having scored at least 9 or 10 direct hits to the base of a beautiful blue spruce (not difficult to do considering the distance), the With Much Deliberation By ANDY PETERSON Christensen - Peterson Dr. Jan and Ruth Christensen are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, Annette, to Jason Gary Peterson, son of Jay and Susan Peterson of South Jordan on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in the Manti LDS Temple. There will be a family dinner to honor Annette and Jason at Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City that evening to celebrate their marriage. Annette is a 2001 graduate of Gunnison Valley High School and LDS Seminary. Annette was on the yearbook staff at GVHS, accompanied and sang with Cantus!, and was Seminary President her senior year. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in history in 2005 and an MBA in 2008. She has been working for In- Page 3 tel as a financial analyst in Santa Clara, CA since receiving her MBA degree. She is the granddaughter of the late Joe and Kathrine Kelly and the late Richard and Lucille Christensen. Jason is a 2000 graduate of Bingham High School and LDS Seminary. He served an LDS mission in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from the University of Utah in 2008 in journalism. Currently, he is pursuing a master's degree in public relations and advertising from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. He is the grandson of Floyd Schramm, the late Beth Eaves Schramm, the late Gary Eaves and the late long time Gunnison residents Frank and Verla Peterson. The couple will make their first home in Chicago, Illinois. Bon Voyage We all have Thanksgiving stories and traditions. A lot of us use the time in between making turkey sandwiches and watching parades on television, for dusting off the boxes of Christmas decorations and deciding if we really want to disentangle the ball of Christmas lights. We often put a Christmas classic in like "It's a Wonderful Life" or "A Christmas Story" with Ralphie and his misadventures. How did other brother-in-law was halfway through chopping down another Christmas tree ...with a machete. Although chopping things down with a machete is not a new concept (in New Guinea), I would dare say that few trees in the 12-Mile Canyon area have been thus felled. Though surprising to some, the machete job was proving much more effective than the spruce falling victim to the fowling piece, so effective in fact, that the frenzied flurry of machete strikes not only sliced through wood, but halfway through the tail of a white Labrador belonging to a third brother-in-law. Fear not, the pater familias of the Las Vegas contingent was able to completely close the wound with a borrowed suture kit. As you might expect, the pater familias, like the pater familias in many families, is stricken with a condition called "far sightedness," the symptoms of which cause the sufferer to extend reading material as though it were part of a trombone. The remedy to this, in this particular story, involved, not one, but two pairs of Wal-Mart magnifying glass bifocals propped on the nose. Although it paints a comical picture, it appeared very professional at the time. These are the things that get remembered. When someone at the dinner party this week proposes something new or not in line with past traditions, realize that it might be the start of a new and valued tradition. Am I connecting this piece of advice to the story I just related? Not entirely. Will there be firearms and machetes involved in this year's Christmas tree harvest? I can't entirely rule it out. It's still a free country. Will pet owners keep their animals at home during the expedition? If non-traditional harvesting methods are to be employed, absolutely.
