Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead Nowhere is that been more evident than with the story of Dr. Gordy Klatt who began the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Klatt decided to raise money for his local American Cancer Society by doing something he enjoyed- running marathons. In May 1985, he spent 24 hours circling the university of Puget Sound’s Baker Stadium Tracka total distance of more than 83 miles. Throughout the day and night, 300 of Dr Klatt’s friends, family and patients paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. That first year he raised $27,000 in the fight against cancer. Dr. Klatt, envisioning that a 24-hour team relay event could raise even more money, pulled together a small committee to plan it. In 1986 his relay raised $33,000, and an indescribable spirit prevailed on the track and in the tents that dotted the infield. That spirit has continued to grow and thrive wherever Relays are held. Relay for Life celebrates survivors, funds research and cancer education, inspires us to be involved in our community, and makes important services possible for patients and their families. This year’s Relay will be held at Gunnison Valley High School Football Field, and it is for EVERYONE. You don’t have to be on a team to participate. All of the fun will begin Friday June 27th at 6 p.m. with the Opening Ceremony and Survivor Lap. Then you are invited to come and eat for $5 per person or $30 for a family. After that, lots of activities have been planned for the evening. There will be pony rides, rock wall climbing, live entertainment, and much, much more. You don’t want to miss out! The auction will begin at 8 p.m. Donations for this are welcome up to the time of the auction. If you would like to donate please contact Tina Clark at 340-1461 or 5283643. Patriotic fireside Mark Henline/Gunnison Valley Gazette Mayor Scott Hermansen, members of the USDA/Rural Development, developer John Mogle, Travis Kyhl of Six County Association, and those participating in the Self Help program broke ground at River Bend Estates last Wednesday. Work on new homes to begin by MARK HENLINE A groundbreaking was held last Wednesday for a group of four future homeowners in the new River Bend Estates subdivision. The subdivision is being developed by John Mogle and is located at 500 South 250 East in Gunnison. The four new homeowners are participating in the Mutual Self-help program sponsored by the USDA Rural Development and the Six County Association of Governments. This program makes housing affordable through sweat equity. The four families will work together as a group under the guidance of a construction supervisor to build approximately 65% of their homes. This labor not only acts as the down payment, but can reduce the price of the home by as much as 25%. The households work together on this project with each family contributing a minimum of 30 hours of labor per week for approximately 10 to 12 months. The four homes will be built simultaneously and no one will move in until all the homes are completed. According to Travis Kyhl, the Six County Self Help manager, these will be beautiful new homes with a garage, a full basement and approximately 1450 square feet on the main level. Each homeowner has several floor plans to choose from. The lot sizes range from one third to a full acre. The program would like to add one more family to the project. Those who might be interested should contact Travis Kyhl with Six County at 435-893-0746. Gunnison Mayor Scott Hermansen, who spoke at the groundbreaking, said, “We are glad to see this project get started. New homes always help a community and make it a better place.” This year’s annual patriotic fireside will be held this Sunday June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Gunnison Stake Center. The featured speaker will be First Lieutenant Shane Day. There will also be a flag ceremony by the 145th and a video presentation by Neal Mellor.
