Show Thursday, June 26, 2008 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Meet the Alpacas Coming soon... your little bit of Gunnison Valley History by MARILYN STEWART Do you remember when “Nightmares & Other Horsin’ Round” was made? Do you know what “Nightmares & Other Horsin’ Round” is??? Remember when the new LDS Stake Center was built in the early 1970’s? Remember when valley residents worked together to raise funds toward this new building? Now, do you remember the silent movie starring our own Boyd Goble and many other valley residents acting out Boyd’s nightmare about how he was to contribute to the building fund? Well, to refresh your memory, Boyd had a nightmare that he robbed the Gunnison Valley Bank! The movie is about his nightmare and the Courtesy Photo Boyd Goble in “Nightmares & Other Horsin’ Round. chase to capture him as he races through Gunnison. The Gunnison Valley Sesquicentennial will have available at the July 4th celebration and the city offices throughout the coming year, DVD’s of “Nightmares & Other Horsin’ Round” for purchase. Proceeds will go toward the events scheduled for the 2009 Sesquicentennial. Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 22-28 Plan, prepare and be aware Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. has declared June 22-28, 2008 as Lightning Safety Awareness Week in Utah, in conjunction with National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. The NOAA Lightning Safety Team, comprised of government and private sector businesses, will lead the lightning safety campaign, with participation from various state and local agencies and businesses. This campaign is designed to lower lightning death and injury rates and America’s vulnerability to one of nature’s deadliest hazards. In the United States, an average of 62 people are killed each year by lightning. In Utah, lightning has claimed the lives of 61 people since 1950, more than any other thunderstorm-related hazard. In October of this past year, a lightning strike claimed the life of an individual camping in the Uinta Mountains. Because lightning usually claims only one or two victims at a time, and because lightning does not cause the mass destruction left in the wake of tornadoes Page 5 or hurricanes, lightning generally receives much less attention than the more destructive weather-related killers. The vast majority of lightning casualties can be easily, quickly, and cheaply prevented through simple easy to follow guidelines. During Lightning Safety Awareness Week, we hope you learn more about lightning risks, and how to protect yourself and your loved ones! MONA, UT. Crooked Fence Alpacas started in August 2005 with four bred females, today they have 15 females and four males, three great pyrenees guard dogs and a llama they call Princess. Success is finding joy in the things you do, and those at Crooked Fence Alpacas have found that with these beautiful animals. Not interested in investing, that’s okay– bring your kids and grandkids to see them and get a picture or two on your camera. In 1997, the United States had roughly 1,000 alpaca owners. Since then, the numbers have more than quadrupled. Today, AOBA (Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association) has more than 4,000 members. Alpacas are native to South America, particularly Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. The United States first commercially imported alpacas in 1984. Current figures note over 100,000 reg- Courtesy Photo Some of the alpacas at Crooked Fence Alpacas. istered alpacas throughout North America. Alpacas are lovable, beautiful animals. The two types of alpacas are distinguished by their fiber. Huacaya (wah-KI’-ya), the more common, is fluffier and often extremely fine. Suri (surrey), the rarer, resembles pencillocks and is very silky. Alpacas stand at approximately 36 inches, at the withers, and weigh between 150 and 200 pounds. They typically have single births, which are usually unassisted. They need plenty of fresh water, consume minimal grass and hay daily, and use a communal dung pile. Five to ten alpacas can be pastured per acre. Their expected lifespan is twenty years. Many alpaca enthusiasts enjoy knitting, spinning, and weaving alpaca fiber, which is stronger, warmer and lighter than wool and is as soft as cashmere. It is hypo-allergenic and comes in 22 natural colors and numerous shades. Alpacas offer a rewarding lifestyle and business opportunity no matter where you live: urban, suburban or rural. Miss Gunnison to hold summer workshops As part of Ashley Wegener’s, Miss Gunnison Valley 2008, service platform she will be putting on a series of clinics and workshops every Monday at Gunnison Park throughout the summer. Next week’s clinic, which will be held on June 30th, will be a service project where she will be putting clothing kits together that will be sent to a crisis center and the Richfield Deseret In- dustries. She is asking people to donate things like shirts, socks, pants, dresses, shorts, and shoes. She asks that you bring at least five different clothing items if possible; clothing that you have outgrown or don’t use anymore. “Come out and give to those less fortunate than yourself,” said Ashley. “This is for all kids elementary and middle school ages. We will have treats afterward.” The upcoming events for July will be held on July 7th, where she will be teaching about dance and again on July 14th where she will hold another service project. July 21st will be a clinic on music and on the 28th she will have a clinic on tennis. For questions, you can call Ashley at 435-851-9723.
