Show Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Sandbox clay Just A Thought By MARK HENLINE This article originally ran in the July 28, 2005 edition. The Gazette has had requests to run it again. When I was a kid I had a fun backyard. Our home was bordered by large, mature ash trees that gave great shade and were great for climbing. Dad also made us kids a playhouse. It was like an A-frame cabin with a wooden floor and a window in the back. When I was a teenager, we were able to get a run at it and run right up the side and then sit on top. When I was very young we also had a teeter-totter. We had a lot of fun on this. I would sit on one side and dad would hold the other side and make the teetertotter buck like a horse. I would laugh and laugh; it was great fun. One day my friend Keith and I were on the teeter-totter. I was up in the air and Keith was on the ground. Keith’s mom called him home and he just jumped off. I, of course fell to the ground. I landed on my butt with a mighty thud. It hurt bad. That was the first time I ever remember getting the wind knocked out of me. I just rolled off the teeter-totter and laid on the ground trying to breathe and cry. When I was about five, my dad went to the lumber yard and bought four long 2x10’s. He then nailed them together and brought in a nice load of white sand. It was a grand sandbox. We played for hours in the sand. We would build roads, mountains and imaginary towns for our trucks. After a few weeks, Keith and I made a great discovery. As we would dig in the sand, we would find little balls of clay. We loved to find this clay. We would squeeze it and mold it with our fingers. I remember making imaginary bails of hay with it and putting it in our Tonka trucks. then we would haul it to our farm and stack it for our horses. I remember the day I hit the jackpot. I was digging in the south-west corner of the sandbox when I hit the mother load. I yelled at Keith, “Look at all this clay!” It was our dream mine. We must have mined clay for half an hour. It was a grand time. About this time, the noon whistle blew at Hercules and we knew it was time for lunch. I went into the house and Mom was making my favorite; a bologna and ketchup sandwich. (Sounds sick now but at the time I loved it.) As I sat down I could hear Paul Harvey on the radio. Mom always listened to Paul Harvey at lunch time. We said a little prayer and as I was just about to pick up my sandwich, Mom said, “Did you wash your hands?” At the time I hated washing my hands but now I am so grateful for Mom’s persistence. I really can’t remember when I discovered what cats use sandboxes for or when it finally dawned on me what the clay was, but now it makes my stomach churn. I wonder how many hours I spent molding clay?
