Show Opinions The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 2 Thursday, June 22, 2006 Hometown sports A trip to the pageant Just A Thought By MARK HENLINE My family along with 30 or 40 other families from the valley just spent three days at a baseball tournament in Richfield. When you add up all the people from our area along with all the families from the other areas of the state there were literally hundreds upon hundreds of families who attended this last tournament. Thank heavens there were only 4 games going at a time because one little bathroom just wouldn't handle much more. I have really come to , A 'v{'WEATHER Thursday 90/51 Sunny Friday , 92/51 Sunny Saturday 92/53 Mostly Sunny love this 2A high school class that we play in. There seems to be a common bond with the communities that we live in that goes beyond sports. Perhaps its that most of our communities are close to the same size or maybe we all share basic beliefs. I love the fact that we get to see so much of the state. One week we can be in Blanding or Moab and the next we'll be traveling to Kamas or Coalville. Whether we are going to football, basketball, baseball, track or drill team competitions, I enjoy how our valley usually sits together to cheer the team on. Then soon after you arrive it can be like a junk food buffet with everyone sharing licorice, cookies, popcorn or extra fries. After eating for a while you hear "Oh, I have ibuprofen in my purse," or "I have some immodium if he needs it." Everyone seems to be looking out for their neighbor. I enjoy seeing some of the rivalries in our small communities. Gunnison has Manti, Beaver has Milford, Panguitch has Escalante and so on. Some of these games can produce some mixed emotions, but in the end we can all usually still walk away friends. The night life is also fun when we end up staying in hotels during a tournament. The kids all get together to swim or to watch a movie in one of the rooms. The parents can go to dinner with Sunday Keep in touch with Hometown Happenings! Subscribe to the 91/54 Gazette! A few years ago at a tournament we attended, it felt like Gunnison Day at the miniature golf course. I think it's also great how the kids all get along together on these trips. I don't mean my kids with each other, that would be a rare treat, I mean the kids of all the different families. They all play together on the playgrounds, in little football games, in squirt gun fights or even like this past week, in dirt clod wars. Once in a while one of the kids will get hurt but within a few minutes they're right back at it. Then after the games are all over, it's nice to have everyone watching out for each other as we make the long trip home. More than once I've had someone from town stop to give me aid along the way. On a trip last year, I wouldn't have made it home without Mike and Sally Neal's help. Another time,,Mark and Kim Christenson stopped to help me on the way home from Fillmore. But that time I had a kid throwing up his nachos, hot dogs, licorice, Dr. Pepper, Snickers and so on. But it still is nice to have them show concern. Like I said, I have really come to love this 2A classification and all the opportunities it brings with it. comes out. Her brother used tofixclocks and she's going to send it to him. Mildred is quite short, but she worked in a casino in Reno back in the 40's and she gets fire in her eyes when someone says things about the church. That man got an earful and walked away like a pup. Mildred didn't cool off for a good hour. She said that man crawled out from a rock and he should slither back under it. We have been going to the pageant for 40 years now. I knew Grace Johnson, who wrote the program. As I recall, she loved cats. After it ended, we got to the van and headed home. Lily was closed when we went through Sterling. I wish I had her energy.
