Gunnison All-Stars take tournament By MARK HENLINE Four All-Star teams from the valley participated in the KB Oil All-Star baseball classic championship in Richfield this past week. Two of our teams, the 11-12 year olds and the 14-15 year olds came away from the tournament as the champions. The tournament began last Wednesday for the older boys and for the younger teams it began on Thursday. The games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were all seeding games for the actual single elimination tournament that took place on Saturday. The tournament is a large tournament and featured teams from Emery, Tropic, Kanab, Juab, Lincoln (Las Vegas), Richfield, South Sevier, North Sevier, Gunnison, Mes- quite Nevada, Piute, three teams from St. George, Delta, Millard, Panguitch, Cleveland and Beaver. Most of these communities sent teams in all age brackets. So for four days the ball fields were very busy places. The All-Star thirteen year old team from Gunnison played their hearts out for the first couple days but failed to make it into the actual tournament. The nine-ten All-Star team played well all week. They began play on Saturday in Richfield's Rotary Park complex and^pfcayed their way all the to the semi-final game. In the semi-final game they met Pangxiitch and came out on the losing end of a tough, exciting game. So the 9-10 All-Stars went home with third place in the tournament. The eleven-twelve year old team went undefeated through the tournament defeating teams from Beaver, Emery, Richfield and Juab. They met up with the Richfield team for a second time in the championship game which didn't begin until 8:30 Saturday evening. The boys played a fantastic game in the final. They jumped out early to a 60 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The whole team was hitting great during the game, Trevon Hanson went 4 for 4 from the plate with some hard hits into the outfield. Ty Bartholomew and Rylan Anderson pitched a solid game. Colby CaWwell made some major league plays from 2nd and 3rd base and Chase Christensen kept things exciting with his hustle and his belly slides into home. When the dust cleared the boys came out on top by a score of 14-7. The 14-15 year old team had a great tournament. They dropped a game earlier in the week against Kanab but were able to play their way back into the championship game were they met up with Richfield. Like the younger boys, this older group also jumped to an early lead and then just dominated throughout the game. In thefirstinning Gunnison was leading 1-0 with 2 outs, •and runners on 1st and 2nd when Matthew Harris stepped up to the plate and smashed a double deep into center field scoring two more runs. Matthew would finish the game with 5 RBI's. This older group also hit great all game long. Put the hitting together with great pitching from Shawn Gubili, Jace Anderson and Will Park and incredible play at 2nd by Max Sanders and you had a great recipe for success. The 14-15 year old AllStars ended up wining the game 12-5. Congratulations to all the boys for a great week of baseball! Gunnison finalizes budget By MARILYN STEWART Spring is always a busy time for the Gunnison City Council as they work through various budget items. Not only must they prepare a budget for the new fiscal year, they must also amend this year's budget for changes that have occurred. One question has come up as the county bookmobile assessment has increased 36%. Our city, had one of the largest increases. The bookmobile will continue to stop at the schools and citizens are welcome to go to those stops or the stops in other communities. Concern was expressed by the council as Centerfield City has indicated that they will no longer make an annual $10,000 donation toward the Gunnison Valley Pool. Some creative thinking will be required to figure out how to make up this deficit. The tentative budget was approved and will be adopted at the June 21st meeting with a public hearing held for resident input. The tentative budget for the general fund was set at $723,000. The special revenue fund, swimming pool, was set at $231,000. The enterprise fund which includes the water/sewer/garbage/pressurized irrigation was set at $565,000. 'Several business licenses have been approved. Randon Anderson received a home occupation license for RAM Restoration & Repair located at 120 West 200 South. He will coordinate repair work for water damaged buildings. Dallam Construction was granted a home occupation license at 50 West 100 South. Jason Dallam is a contractor. Guy McArthur was issued a home occupation license for Guy'j Wood Shop located at 48 East 100 South. The council approved adding the Gunnison Valley Middle School Cheerleading as part of the Gunnison Valley Recreation program for a one year probationary period. Advisor Dawna Hamblin was reminded that all who want to are allowed to participate and they would not participate in competition without approaching the council for permission. Adriana Hatch was appointed to a three-year term on the Gunnison Civic Library Board by Mayor Hermansen. Maynard Jacobsen was elected Chief of the Gunnison Valley Fire Department by department members. Jessica Christensen was hired as the city hall custodian. Fred Harris, Jr., was awarded the baseball field maintenance bid for this season. A reminder is issued to all valley residents that no open burning is permitted without a burn permit issued by the fire department or the county fire warden after June 1st. Mosquitoes are growing healthy and numerous this spring so the city will be spraying for them several times over the summer. The first time was prior to Memorial Day weekend. The second spraying is sched- uled for now, mid-June, and another spray will be befpre the 4th of July celebration. The county has received funds and will be able to reimburse the city for the spraying costs. Several youth have approached council members about lights for the skateboard park. The city agreed to look into costs to do this. The city is working with Magellan Mapping of Meadow, Utah to provide the city with a GIS mapping system for the water, sewer, pressurized irrigation, cemetery, zoning, and other city information.
