Coach (Continued from A1) Judkins admits that his teams often don’t have some of the talent other teams in the conference might have, but that his teams make up for some of that by playing together. Judkins’ USU player’s bio says, “ . . . he brings an instinctive ability to the game,” which coach Olson names as another reason for the team’s success. “He’s got a great basketball mind,” says Olson. “He knows the game so well, he sees things that most people don’t see. Judkins says that, more important than winning, or even the game itself, is that his players get an education. He boasts that since he’s been at Snow, only two players have not graduated. Sophomore Kasey Winters says, “Education is important [to Judkins]. He wants us to learn more than just basketball.” Judkins himself says, “It’s not just basketball. It’s life.” In the world of college coaching, 13 years is a long time to spend in any one place, but Judkins doesn’t indicate any intention of leaving anytime soon. “I love it here. It’s a good place,” he says. “Why change when you like what you’re doing. And you don’t want to leave something when you’ve worked hard to built it up.” And of course, it’s hard to say goodbye when you get as close to something as Judkins does to his players. After the game that put Snow out of the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament three weeks ago, the sophomore players weren’t the only ones with tears in their eyes, knowing they had played their last game together. Seeing Judkins with red, puffy eyes, one could understand a little better what Moses Hawkins meant when he said, “Coach is like one of the boys.” Gunnison Provider Clinics Monday through Friday Kim Beck, M.D. FAMILY PRACTICE Kimberly Beck, MD ........ 528-7935 Cary Judy, D.O.
