Jean was born on April 30, 1924, in her family’s home at 96 East 200 South in Manti to Parley Christian and Miranda Jensen Madsen. She has lived most of her life within a few blocks of the big red house on the corner where she was born. Jean’s father was a prominent sheep rancher who operated a ranch in Christenburg and was partner in the Wah Wah Ranch in Milford. She grew up when hard work was a necessity. She graduated from Manti High School and attended Utah State University. Jean married her high school sweetheart, Kay Frischknecht, and they started their own ranching operation. Working side by side, they were partners in every sense of the word. Jean prepared and delivered meals to her husband in the fields, pastures and ranges during the busy times such as lambing, shearing and moving sheep. The couple raised nine children while Jean worked full time. She worked first at Manti Elementary and then at the USU Extension as secretary. Jean has been outgoing and involved in her church and the social life of Manti. No matter how busy she was, her Jean Frischknecht home and family came first. Her children remember a clean and inviting home, home-baked bread, handmade quilts for every bed and love and comfort whenever needed. “For this and many more reasons, Mom has been an example for generations and is adored by her family,” her daughter Kristine Frischknecht said. Jean has always been fun loving. Her grandchildren love to remember her antics, including riding a four-wheeler at age 80. One year the family went to Lake Powell, and Jean kept telling the grandchildren over and over, “You can’t jump off the top of the houseboat.” On the last day Jean could not stand it anymore, and the family heard thump, thump, thump, and then the sound of a big cannon ball into the water. Going outside, they saw Grandma in the water. Jean and her husband have nine children, 41 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Daffodils - a symbol of hope for cancer victims By Kathy Lin Eggleston Staff writer GUNNISON—In support of the fight against cancer, the Gunnison Valley Hospital Home Health Care and Hospice staff gave patients daffodils, the American Cancer Society’s symbol of hope. As winter gives way to spring, raising funds with the daffodils is one way communities can support the American Cancer Society. Another is getting involved with Relay for Life. “Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society,” said Carol Oakey, hospice volunteer and Gunnison Relay for Life team recruiter. “Some of our relay teams enjoy doing this every year, but we can always use new teams.” The American Cancer Society is at work in communities across the country providing programs aimed at reducing the risk of cancer, detecting cancer as early as possible, ensuring proper treatment, and empowering people facing cancer to cope and maintain the highest possible quality of life. Local team recruitment meetings for the Relay for Life start in Gunnison on April 7 from 5:306:30 p.m. at Gunnison City Hall. For information on the Gunnison event call 528-3955. For more information about the upcoming schedule of Relay for Life in each community in Sanpete County, call the local American Cancer Society representative at 835-6351. |
