NEWS•BRIEFS COUNTYWIDE INTEREST Booths available for Scandinavian Festival By Karen Buchanan EPHRAIM—If you want to set up a booth for the Scandinavian Festival in Ephraim over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, now is the time to reserve your space. A number of requests are in from outside the county, but the committee is especially interested in local vendors. The various types of booths require different size spaces, so the committee needs to talk to interested parties to ascertain their requirements before quoting fees. For information, contact Jessica Madsen at 283-0536 or Jenny Smith at 851-2346. Club encourages recycling for tsunami relief EPHRAIM—Twenty-one members from the Dead Cats Society (DCS), the Snow College Life Science Club, worked over 60 hours to raise more than $1,000 for the tsunami relief effort. “The Dead Cats Society would like to thank all of those who donated time and money toward this noble cause,” DCS President Carolyn Cobey said. “We also want to remind you to recycle those aluminum cans. Throwing them away is such a waste and bad for our environment, too.” Blue recycling bins are stationed in all of the buildings on the Snow College campus. DCS has taken its recycling efforts off campus by placing dozens of cardboard boxes labeled for recycling in many businesses throughout Sanpete County. The money raised from these endeavors will also go toward tsunami relief. The Dead Cats Society meets every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Snow College Science Building, room 327. For more information contact Carolyn Cobey at cccobey@hotmail.com. County to begin marketing campaign By John Hales The Sanpete County Travel and Heritage Council has enlisted the aid of a media and marketing company to spread the word about what Sanpete County has to offer by way of recreation, heritage and other attractions. Earlier this month, the council discussed a publicity campaign designed by the company Carlisle Exchange, which has promoted Sanpete County in the past, and currently promotes Ephraim’s Scandinavian Festival, Manti’s Mormon Miracle Pageant, and Fourth of July festivities throughout the county. The campaign will include radio, television and newspaper ads, as well as working with local schools and Snow College to promote attractions and events. Funding for the campaign will come from hotel/motel room taxes and restaurant taxes, according to information provided by the council. The contract provides that the county will pay nearly $12,000 this year for the coverage. Since the county has no fire department of its own, it contracts with local fire departments to provide coverage. Gunnison communities work on fire agreement By Tery Robertson GUNNISON—Gunnison, Fayette, Mayfield and Centerfield are in the process of forming an agreement regarding the local fire department, according to Gunnison City councilmember Lori Nay. “We are getting an interlocal agreement together so we can move forward,” Nay says. “We’re working on our purpose, structure and duties…working together and making progress and planning for the future. Currently, there is one fire department—located in Gunnison but made up of volunteers from all four communities—that serves the entire area. Gunnison City recorder Marilyn Stewart says the process underway is mainly an effort to formalize the arrangement that is already in place, and to form Fire Advisory Board for the area. 435-623-7083 Office 801-592-1278 Mobile • New construction, reroof repairs, strip-offs, free bids, • Insurance claims welcome.
