Sanpete athletes named to All-state teams By Mitch Peterson Staff writer Local high school athletes picked up a bundle of individual post-season awards after the winter sports schedule concluded. The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News use a coaches’ poll to pick Athletic All-State teams, while the Utah High School Athletic Association (UHSAA) selects a ten-member Academic All-State team for each of its sanctioned activities. Academic All-State members must be seniors, regular performers on their school team, and have at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average. Here’s a roundup of local honorees, both athletic and academic: North Sanpete basketball player Jessica Aagard and Manti drill team member Tausha Barclay received both honors. Both were named first team All-State in the Tribune and earned academic AllState awards in their respective sports. Aagard also garnered a second team All-State selection in the Lady Templars upbeat despite injuries, first loss By Mitch Peterson Staff writer MONROE—Despite dealing with some temporary injuries and losing the first game of the season last week, the Manti Lady Templars softball team is as upbeat as ever. The Templars traveled to Monroe to face Region 12 foe South Sevier Tuesday, March 22 and lost 6-7. With pitchers Mandy Hatch and Kelsey Johnson sidelined with minor injuries, sophomore Natalya Beal got her first varsity start and threw a complete game, striking out two and holding the powerful Rams lineup to just eight hits. “Awesome” was the word used by several teammates to describe Beal’s performance. Manti catcher and centerfielder Cassidy Lund agreed. “I think we did really well, since both our starting pitcher and first baseman had never played in a varsity game before,” Lund said, pointing out that sophomore Alicia Tripp also turned in a strong game filling in for Johnson at first base. Hatch stretched her Achilles tendon during a sliding drill in practice, and Johnson strained her back during a team weightlifting session. Both are expected to be back in action this week. The Templars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the South Sevier game, but a basesloaded triple by Shannon Abbott capped off a five-run second inning for the Rams. Manti got three more runs across in the third to take a 6-5 lead, but South Sevier got two of their own in the fourth, and pitcher Shanae Marsh shut out the Templars the rest of the way to seal the 7-6 Ram win. After last week’s games, South Sevier and San Juan are tied for the top spot in Region 12 with 2-0 records. Manti is 8-1 overall, with a games next week against the Hunter Wolverines in West Valley City and a Region 12 match-up at Gunnison. DRIVERS ENGLAND TRUCKING JOB FAIR! Learn To Drive With The Best! She was the second leading scorer among 3A schools, at just over 18 points a game to complement her lofty grade point average. Barclay served as president for Manti’s drill team this past season, leading the Templarettes to their fourth straight 2A state championship while maintaining a nearperfect GPA. She’s been on the team for all four of those state titles. Joining Aagard and Barclay as Academic All-State members are Manti’s Karen Johnson in girls’ basketball, and Templar wrestlers Chans Lund and Austin Pieper. The cumulative GPA of the five Academic All-State selections is 3.94. Manti drill team members Dawnette Black and Katie Olsen joined Barclay on the Tribune’s All-State team. Both are seniors and four-year veterans of the Templarettes. Manti girls’ basketball player Sili Hafoka earned first team AllState honors in the Tribune and was second team All-State in the Deseret News, while teammate Cassie Tucker made the Tribune’s second team. Hafoka and Tucker are sophomores and were part of a Lady Templar team that finished fourth at state. The Manti boys’ basketball team took second at state and afterward pulled in several individual awards. Taylor Salanoa was a first team All-State selection in both the Tribune and Deseret News, while teammate Josh Hugentobler was named to the Tribune’s first team, and the Deseret News second team. Manti’s Devin Frischknecht and Travis Thompson both made second team All-State in the Tri- bune, and third team All-State in the Deseret News. The Templars will reload next year since all of those players are seniors. Gunnison boys’ basketball player Jack Pay was a 2A second team All-State choice in the Tribune, while Gunnison girls’ basketball star and fellow senior Kelsey Jensen got an honorable mention from the Deseret News. Two local wrestlers won state championships this year. North Sanpete junior Jake Swenson won his third straight 3A title, this year at 130 pounds, and Manti senior Jim Madsen was the 2A champion at 119 pounds. |
