Show B9 Castle Valley Review, March 2009 FBLA hosts region conference Brandon Gomez and Cameron Hansen FBLA hosted regional conference at the College of Eastern Utah on Feb. 10. Ten schools attended this event, including Uintah, Union, Duchesne, Altamont, Emery, Grand, Monticello, San Juan, and Roosevelt. Uintah took first and Carbon placed second overall. Pat Kokal said, “We need to thank Kimi for all the hard work she did. She is the Eastern Region vice president, so she had to set most of this up.” Students were excused all day from school. In the morning, from nine to twelve, they took a myriad of tests then took a break for lunch. After lunch, FBLA members made homemade ice cream while their tests were being scored. Finally, CEU raffled off various items, and the awards ceremony took place. The Carbon High students who placed in regional competition this year areas follows. In Accounting One, Collin Moynier placed 3rd, Tia Pappas took 4th and Demetria Campbell took 5th. In Banking and Financial systems, Kelcee Gilson took 2nd, and Jenafer Henrie took 3rd. Josh Erramouspe took 4th in Business Calculations. Kristen Jewkes took 3rd in Business Law and Brittney Jepson took 5th. Felisha Gibson took 5th in Business Math. Nick Child took 4th in Business Procedures. In Economics, Kelcee Gilson took 2nd, Faith Martinez took 3rd, and Leila Warring took 4th. Brooke Mcfarlane took 3rd in FBLA Principles and Procedures and Jessica Turcaso took 5th. In Global Business, Lacey Pugliese took 4th and Boyd Marsing took 5th. A J Harmond took 4th in Intro to business and Audra Eaquinto took 5th. In Introduction to Parliamentary Procedures, AJ Harmond also took 2nd and Shane Castanon took 5th. In Management Decision Making, Jed Prettyman took 2nd, Cameron Hansen took 3rd, and Lexi Trease took 4th. Nick Child took 2nd in Marketing, and Faith Martinez took 3rd. In Networking Concepts, Geoffrey Vogel took 3rd, Troy Munns took 4th, and Kenny Seals took 5th. Lexi Trease took 4th in Parliamentary Procedure. Boyd Marsing took 2nd in Spreadsheet. In Word Processing II, Miranda Gold took 2nd and Morgan Johnson took 3rd. Kimberly Lloyd took 3rd in Future Business Leader. For the state conference, students will travel to Ogden, stay overnight, and take several tests in addition to going to workshops and meeting new people. When asked about how he thought we would do in state this year, Kokal said, “We have taken first place in state in the past, so hopefully we can do it again this year.” Teacher and coach Camille Carlson aims to inspire her students. Ms. Carlson Hits the Top Samantha Asay She teaches AP U.S. History, AP Prep English, and Junior English. She coaches girls basketball and competes in sporting events. This busy person is Camille Carlson, who has been teaching since 2000. This is her 9th year teaching and she enjoys helping students. “I always had teachers who inspired me and I wanted to do the same for the students here at Carbon High.” States Carlson. This inspiration comes from everything she gathered while she was in school. Ms. Carlson has also been inspired by, our newest President, Barack Obama because he challenged the racial stereotypes. Kim Hayes, a senior here at Carbon High, states that, “Ms. Carlson is fun, carefree, has an awesome sense of humor, and is open to opinions.” Kim explains that Ms. Carlson is her favorite English teacher. Bethany Leavitt explains, “My most memorable moment with Ms. Carlson was last year. She basically hunted me down to get me to turn in my portfolio so I didn’t fail.” In her spare time Carlson wake boards, snowboards, reads, and more recently has been competing in triathlons. Carlson wants students to think for themselves, make their own decisions, and to know that they can accomplish their dreams and goals no matter what people say. Stephanie Cha Balances a Busy Life with Style Alyssa Milovich Stephanie Cha is involved in the school newspaper, is the speech and drama Sterling Scholar, performs prose/poetry at debate tournaments and is working on her star event in FCLA, among other things. When she isn’t working on the school newspaper, Stephanie Cha can be found deeply involved in any number of activities both at school and out in the community. This impressive Carbon High senior works very hard in school and is a good friend to everyone. Stephanie is the chief editor for the CarbonNation (the school newspaper), is the Speech and Drama Sterling Scholar candidate, performs Prose/Poetry at debate tournaments, is working on her star event in FCCLA, and plans to participate in Region Drama in both a scene and in the One Act, Aria de Capo. Brett Stanfield stated, “She is an amazing actress. She sure is a character.” Stephanie also dances with the Nonstop Dance Company with Linda Johnston, works as the chairman of the miniature golf course, and job shadows at Sally Mauro Elementary School. When she isn’t so busy, she loves to hang out with her family, friends, and go to an occasional basketball game. Even with her busy schedule, Stephanie maintains a 3.982 grade point average. After high school, she wants to attend Southern Utah University and major in elementary education. Stephanie’s dream is to become a mother and have a great family. Some fun facts about Stephanie are that her favorite food is sushi, she likes to write monologues in her spare time, and she is very outspoken. All in all, Stephanie is a very smart, fun person who lives her life to the fullest. If you haven’t gotten the chance to get to know her, then do. You will be in for a treat. |
