Show Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2010 • A l l Indoor track season starts with BYU meet Dave Boyack STAFF WRITER Maple Mountain, Salem Hills and Spanish Fork High track athletes have begun preparations for the outdoor season by competing in unattached indoor track meets hosted by colleges in the state. BYU hosted the first meet Saturday, Jan. 16 at their indoor facility, welcoming close to 600 athletes from the state of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada. The top finisher in the girls' mile run was turned in by Salem Hills' Cosette Stone with a 26th place finish in 5:55. Spencer Hanson and Tyler Gebert of Maple Mountain and Salem Hills, respectively, ran close together as they finished 8th and 11th. Their times of '4:38 and 4:41 were outstanding this early in the year. In the 60m hurdles, Salem Hills' Jo Julian place 14th with a time of 11.20. Spanish Fork's Kelsey Briggs placed 27th with a time of 12.28. In the boys 60m hurdles, Maple Mountain senior Jordan Cuthbert showed he will be a top state performer as he finished tied for 5th. Jordan's time of 9.15 also earned him a spot on the podium and a medal. Reese Knutsen of Salem Hills placed 17th in 10.26. In the women's 60m dash, Maple Mountain's Dani Esplin made the finals and placed 6th overall with a time of 8.19. Dani also found herself on the medal stand. In the women's 400m dash, Maple Mountain's Kelsie Hadlock was the top local finisher, with a time of 1:06 and a 13th place finish. Maple Mountain's Jeff Brammer had a great early season in the boys 400m by placing 5th in 51.76. Brammer's time also earned him a podium medal. Teammate Brent Strong also ran well, finishing 9th overall in 52.99. Jeff Brammer came back later to tie for second in the men's 200 with a time of 23.59. Salem Hills' Jo Julian led the way for the ladies with a 21st place finish in 29.06. In the women's twomile, Cosette Stone ran well placing 8th in 12:33. For the boys, Maple Mountain's Spencer Hanson ran his best indoor time of 9:59, placing him in second overall. Spencer's efforts earned him a medal and place on the podium. In the women's high jump, Salem Hills' Siale Vaitohi jumped to a thirdplace medal-winning performance at 5 T \ Maple Mountain's Parker Cressman had his best indoor effort, placing second at 6' Namon Bills / The Sentinel EXTRA INCHES: Salem Hills' Siale Vaitohi, pictured above at an event last year, placed third in the women's high jump. 4.75". In the girls' long jump, Salem Hills Siale Vaitohi and Jo Julian placed 5th and 6th, with jumps of 15'6" and 15'4", earning both of them podium medals. Maple Mountain's Jordan Cuthbert place 9th with a jump of 19'. The final event of the day saw a Maple Moun- tain foursome of Jordan Cuthbert, Eddie Prothero, Brent Strong and Jeff Brammer take first place in the 4xl00m relay. Their winning time of 2:49 just barely edged out Timpanogos and Skyline High. Next week will find the indoor athletes competing in the Weber State Invitational. Kate Jarman / The Sentinel RIVALRY: The Dons and Skyhawks stayed neck-and-neck until Spanish Fork was able to pull away in the fourth. Close game ends in SF win Alexis Richardson STAFF WRITER On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Salem Skyhawks girls' basketball team went up against the Spanish Fork Dons in a close game that ended in a victory for the Dons, 46-39. The Lady Dons scored the first shot of the game, beginning a fast-paced first quarter. The Skyhawks' first shot, which was also the first three-pointer of the game, was made by senior Erika Adams. The score stayed pretty even for the first couple minutes of the game, and then the Skyhawks pulled ahead. Jamiee Hodgson made two shots in the first quarter, along with Hailey Ingram and Erika Adams for the Skyhawks. Senior Erin Redd made some great shots for the Dons in the first quarter. By the end of the first, the score was tied, 13-13. In the second quarter, the Skyhawks kept up the pace and the Dons fell behind. Adams made another three-pointer and Hodgson scored two more shots for the Skyhawks. Hailey Ingram also scored again for the Skyhawks. The .second quarter ended 24-17 with the Skyhawks in the lead. The Dons' four second-quarter points came from Kylee Wolf and Erin -Redd. After halftime, the Dons got back in the game, and eventually took the lead. But the Skyhawks didn't give up. Both teams continued to play hard. Kelli Hales made a three-pointer, and Shea Johnson also scored for the Dons. Jerika Durfey made a three-pointer for the Skyhawks. The third quarter ended with the score 34—33 in favor of the Dons. In the last quarter, the Dons increased their lead as the Skyhawks went cold. Spanish Fork worked hard and rebounded a lot. Brynlie Nielsen, Erin Redd, Shea Johnson and Jen Huntsmen contributed for the Dons to end the game with the 4 6 39 win. This game looked like it was going one way and it ended up in the other direction. "The inexperience of the team showed up in the last half of the game," said Skyhawks' head coach Mike Conner. "The last four minutes we just panicked." The Dons worked hard and it ended up paying off for them. "The Skyhawks are a good team and they're well coached," said Dons' head coach Aubrey Johnson. "The second half of the game went great. We were more aggressive and took more inside shots as well. We had some great rebounds and we just chipped away little by little and it turned out well." Union girls defeat ALA Michael Richardson STAFF W R I T E R On Thursday, Jan. 14, the ALA Lady Eagles played the Union Cougars. The frustrated Eagles fought hard throughout the game, but despite their efforts, the Cougars left them far behind, winning the game 60-27. In the first quarter, ALA scored first, but Union quickly started to take the lead. The Eagles continued to fight for more points, but only managed to make one foul shot for the rest of the quarter. Union scored a total of 13 points in the first quarter, making the score 13-3. In the second quarter, Union continued to increase their lead to 22-3. Midway through the quarter, ALA finally started to score some points, Sarah Madson made a basket from the three-point line, and soon after Mauri Staheli scored, making the score 26-8. Towards the end of the quarter Madson scored again. Wendy Trujillo and Mauri Staheli also both made one of two foul shots, making the score at halftime 31-14. In the third quarter, Wendy Trujillo scored the first point for the Eagles, and soon after, Sarah Madson made one of two foul shots as did Paige Laughlin. Despite the Eagles' improvement, Union led 33-18. Towards the end of the quarter, Sarah Madson went up for a shot and was fouled, but she made the basket and also made the foul shot, bringing the score to 33-21. Union quickly scored again, and the score at the end of the quarter was 39-22. In the fourth quarter, Sarah Madson made two foul shots, Abbi Bean made one and so did Paige Laughlin. Despite the Eagles' effort, the Cougars scored over 20 points in the fourth quarter, making the final score 60-27, , |
