The PTSA was thrilled to bring her to visit to put a great finish on the school's Red Ribbon Week. Her presentation was entitled "Be the change in Utah." She taught the student body that amazing things can happen when they realize that even as one person they can make an immense difference in the lives of others in their school and community. Merrifield also taught the students that by stepping out of their comfort zones they can more fully experience high school and make incredible memories. The students were encouraged to mix up their seating and sit with people that they didn't know. By putting themselves out there, many new friends were made and it became even more enjoyable for the students. Merrifield discussed the "social groups" in high school and how cliques are formed so subconsciously we hardly notice them, because it has become the norm. But we are all people with similar problems, and only.good can come from reaching out. She also taught that by befriending others and performing acts of change, big or small every day, we will gain personal power, peer pressure is shifted, and drug use, bullying and teen suicide are lowered. Students left with a motivation to throw themselves into great acts, and be the reason that smiles are on the faces of their fellow students. i TAKING A STAND: PTSA members, pictured, left to right, are Dallin Kimber, Kaetlin Bracken, Ashley Rawle, Erica Pratt, Amanda Pray and Ryan Lofthouse. On Monday morning a huge banner was placed at the front entrance on which students were able to sign their names, pledging to be dnig free. Names were added all week until it was completely rilled, and then taken to the football stadium to be displayed at Wednesday night's football game. Students were also given red "Take a Stand" bracelets to wear throughout the week, and everyone wore red on Wednesday. Each morning's announcements were also a reminder for the student body to remain drug free. Statistics on the harmful effects of drugs were given to show how many drug users and their loved ones are negatively affected each day. Although it was a short week due to fall break, energy filled the school as the students pledged to "Take a Stand." |
