He feels the biggest issues facing the city are budget concerns. "We need money to maintain the infrastructure, to get more for less, and that takes good planning," he said. "We need to do it in smart ways so we can take care of our needs with our limited resources." Adams feels it's important for the city council and mayor to work well together. He feels he is good at working with people and helping them get through stalemates to reach a positive solution. Adams is a research scientist, which has given him valuable leadership experience. He manages around 20 employees, is accountable for a $300,000 budget, and oversees large projects. Adams said he has many qualities that help him be an effective leader. He is "data-driven," so he said he's able to separate people from emotional issues, to see the solutions logically. He is volunteer minded, and has served several years on the Woodland Hills Days committee, as well as volunteering with the Old Geezer Construction Company that built the community center. His wife, Marcy, is a first responder and the assistant fire chief, and Adams wrote the grants that secured $20$30,000 in grants for the Woodland Hills fire department. Adams has three children, ranging in age from 15 to five years, and he is proud they are active in the public schools and the public team sports-. Wolsey STAFF WRITER Jon Cope wasoorn and raised in Spanish Fork. His wife, Nadene, was born and raised in Salem, and Salem is where they raised their family. They have three sons and three daughters, and 14 grandchildren. Five of their children are married, and their youngest daughter is currently serving a mission in Tucson, Ariz. Cope is selfemployed and is running for Salem City Mayor. "I'm very passionate about Salem," said Cope. "We have tried to be involved civically, tried to do our part." Cope would like to preserve and protect the uniqueness of Salem. He is also concerned about the economic challenges facing the community. "I believe the administration needs to be aware of the economy, and be fiscally responsible," he said. Cope hopes to enhance the local economic base, and increase the economic strength of Salem. April Clawson Ryan Farnworth Brent Black Although Brent Black's family moved to the Spanish Fork/Salem area when he was only five years old, he counts himself as a lifetime resident. Black is a proud graduate of Spanish Fork High School, and currently works for Sunroc Construction. He and his wife Kerrie Cox, also a lifetime resident, have three sons and four grandchildren. Black is running for Salem City Council because he sees it as an opportunity to serve the community that he loves. He says the main issues facing the city are growth and taxes. • "I'd like to see Salem maintain its beautiful, rural feel," Black said. April Clawson is running for Mapleton city council. She has lived in Mapleton for four years, coming here from Cedar City for a job change. Clawson has been married for 20 years and has four children ages 8-16. She is currently a student atUVU. Clawson has always felt a feeling of civic responsibility. She has given several thousand hours in community service, serving in all the PTA executive positions, with Boy Scouts of America, and on the board at Merit Academy. She has been interested in getting more involved in city politics for about six years now. "The opportunity opened up so I jumped at the chance," she said. In her many community service capacities, Clawson has learned how to organize and work with people. ,As a founding parent at Merit Academy, Clawson was involved in writing documents, going after grants and making employment decisions. "I know how to follow and implement rules, and to help things go forward," she said. Clawson's goals for the city are to create building incentives to get the community thriving again and to help get a broader city tax base. She would love to have a farmer's market during summer months, which would encourage residents to celebrate their community and get to know each other. Ryan Farnworth Ryan Farnworth is running for Mapleton city council. A lifelong resident of Mapleton, he loves the open, country feel of the community with its close proximity to . the mountains.
