Salem started the scoring on its first possession which ended in a 67-yard TD pass to Josh Fafita. On ALA's ensuing drive the Skyhawks forced a punt, but they fumbled the return and the Eagles were able to recover it. The Eagles were able to drive it down to the 20 yard line, but the Salem defense was able to hold them there and forced a field goal attempt. The 37-yard field goal attempt was good by kicker Jared Chichia. STAFF WRITER In the last home game of the season the Salem Hills Skyhawks were able to go out with a bang as they dismantled the ALA Eagles 40-10. The game was dedicated to the Salem seniors and they were given ample playing time, as it would be the last game they ever play at Skyhawk Stadium. Josh Adams got the job done through the air more than on the ground, passing for three touchdowns, even Later in the second quarter the Skyhawks were able to get a stellar special teams play of their own, with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Billy Fairbanks to put Salem ahead 20-3. Salem ended the half by throwing an 18-yard TD pass to Cody Bullard who had two TD catches on the day. Coming out of halftime, ALA drove down to the 35 yard-line, but the Salem defense was able to force a field goal once again. This time the long 50-yard field goal was short, and the ball was turned over to the Skyhawks. Salem then drove down the field, with Adams converting a fourth and one into a 31-yard run down to the seven yard-line, where Kolapa Wolfgramm was able to run the ball in untouched for the score. The Eagles answered with an effective offensive series led by quarterback Hunter Morely down to the 37 yard-line, but their fourth-down attempt was stymied by the Salem defense, and the Skyhawks took over on downs early in the fourth quarter. Josh Adams was replaced by backup quarterback Jordan Robles for the rest of the fourth quarter, and was able to engineer a scoring drive, which culminated on a pass to Nate Jellum. The Eagles would not give up easily, and they showed resilience throughout the whole game. Late in the quarter they were able to drive down to the three yard-line. On third and goal Hunter Morely was able to find tight end Cole Fulton on a shallow out route, but he was met immediately with a hard hit from Nate Jellum. Fulton stayed on his feet and drove the ball to the goal line, where the ball was stripped, but was recovered by ALA for their only touchdown of the night. This win was especially sweet for the Skyhawks seniors. "It meant a lot. We have played hard all year, and it is kind of sad that it has come to a close, but to end with a win was good," said senior quarterback Josh Adams. But from a spectator's vantage point during last Wednesday's contest (halftime score of 42-0 for SF), many probably wondered if the home team's players were still battling a nasty virus. Spanish appeared to have no let-down after a tough loss at home or any jet lag from the four-hour bus ride to Dinosaur land. The red and gray took care of business, routing their opponent 42-7. PJ Inoke broke off a 66-yard run that went for a score to give the Dons the early lead. After a successful defensive stand, Spanish moved the ball inside the red zone where Tim Moala punched it in on a one-yard TD run for a 14—0 advantage. Before the end of the first quarter, the Dons had built a comfortable lead of 21-0 when sophomore QB Hayden Nielsen hooked up with Chase Loftin for a 15yard TD reception. And the rout was on. In the second quarter, the SF defense continued to dominate the Utes. Nielsen found another big target in Jordunn Mattinson, who hauled in a 19-yard TD catch to go up 28-0. To Sliane Marshall / Tlie Sentinel TOP DON: Spanish Fork's Merik Richardson has been a steady force for the Dons throughout the season. make matters worse for Uintah, PJ Inoke delivered a pick-six when he intercepted a Ute pass and raced 65 yards to the pylon for a 35-0 lead. Halftime must have felt like eternity for the home team, but the Dons scoring spree didn't end there. Nielsen once again led his team down the field and took one in himself from six yards out to go up 42-0 at intermission. After this lopsided victory, SF now travels two miles up town to face off with crosstown rival Maple Mountain for their final Region 8 game on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. • |
