The Golden Eagles lost a tough defensive struggle 1-0 to the Warriors, ending Maple Mountain's state tournament experience. The girls claimed second place in Region 8 and were one of the first teams from MMHS to compete at state. Pictured, above, is Jessica Blackett. Maple Mountain boys and girls cross country teams pulled off a rare double by winning both team cross country titles at the first-ever Region 8 cross country championships at Salem Hills High School on Monday, Oct. 12,2009. In one of the most competitive races anyone will ever see, the Lady Golden Eagles barely edged Salem Hills by a mere three points. Salem Hills1 Cosette Stone did her best to help the Skyhawk cause by placing first overall, but Maple Mountain placed five girls in the top 10 to come away with the narrow win. Kelsie Hadlock placed third overall, with Haley Knapp, Rachel Warnick, Lindsey Schuring and Chantel Johnson finished close behind to help seal the win. The Golden Eagles were running without Ashley Phelps, who normally runs in the num- ber two spot. Ashley was involved in an auto accident five days ago but was able to attend and cheer her teammates on to an emotional win. For the lady Skyhawks, Kaetlin Bracken, Becca Jones, Karlee Loss and Cassidy Dascomb all placed in the top 12, helping their team to a solid second-place finish and a berth in the state meet next week with the Lady Golden Eagles. Courtney Acosta was the top Spanish Fork runner, finishing in 18th place overall. On the boys side. Maple Mountain's Spencer Hanson placed third overall in helping his team bring home the first place trophy. Holden Adams was close behind in fourth, while Zach Johnson, Jonah Hadlock and Lance Merrill all placed in the top 11 to finish seven points ahead of Springville. Jordan Daniels of Salem Hills placed fifth, with Tyler Gebert and Alex Minson going eighth and ninth, helping their team to a third-place finish and a berth in the state meet next week also. The top Spanish Fork runner was Tyler Gait in 26th place. In the junior varsity races, Maple Mountain's Kyrie Carpenter finished first, with Ally Duffin of Salem Hills finishing second. On the boys' side, Matt Chestnutt of Salem Hills was the top local finisher in second, with Maple Mountain's Nathan Foutz close behind in third. Team results Girls 1. Maple Mountain 31 2.
