Show Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2009 • A l l Ranch rodeo features Youth Golf working cowboys Jeril Bills STAFF W R I T E R The annual Utah County Fair Ranch Rodeo will be held on Friday, Aug. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the main arena at the Spanish Fork fairgrounds. The event is different from a professional rodeo, because in the ranch rodeo, teams compete performing tasks that would normally be done on a ranch. Event co-organizer Jason Riding says that those competing aren't rodeo cowboys, but everyday working cowboys. There are four events in the ranch rodeo: big group roping, horse roping, mugging and saddle bronc riding. In big group roping,'a big group heads and heels a steer using an 18 foot loop to catch it. Horse roping involves four team members trying to rope two horses set loose in the arena. In the mugging event, 10 cows are let loose in the arena, each with a number. The announcer calls out a number, and one person on the team has to find that cow and rope it, and take it across a marked line to the other three members of the team, who tip it over and tie three of its feet. The cow has to stay tied-up for six seconds. Stock saddle bronc riding is perhaps the main event of the ranch rodeo. Contestants use a regular riding saddle and try to stay on a bucking horse any way possible for at least eight seconds. Riding says the contestants come dressed-up just as if they were about to work on the ranch, Since the ranch rodeo is comprised of events that represent tasks actually performed on a ranch, it is perhaps more akin to the original rodeos of the past than professional rodeos are today. There is no admissions fee for the ranch rodeo. Courtesy photos TEE TIME: Spanish Oaks held a junior tournament and had over 50 youth attend.
