Show -N E \V S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2008 • B3 Soccer Dons fall 3-0 to Vikings Danielle Jones STAFF WRITER On April 8, 2008 the young Spanish Fork soccer team lost a rough match against Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove shut out the Dons 3-0. "It was , a frustrating game. We aren't playing to our full potential," said defender Austin Blanchard. The Dons came close to scoring, but were not quite able to convert. Jose Olivarez, Allan Measom, and Arturo Hernandez all were able to get good shots off. However, the highlight of the game was when Riley Dineheart hit the crossbar on a shot. The Dons are working hard to improve and have the ability to stick with any team. "We need to work on team unity; working together to play to the potential that we believe we have," said Blanchard. The Dons will be in action next on April 22 at home against American Fork. "I am optimistic about the rest of the season. If we work hard every day and dedicate ourselves we can be successful," said Blanchard. SF Flash wins Open Court Tournament How do you follow up a tournament championship in the AAU Mr. Basketball Tournament? Win the Open Court Seventh Grade Upper Division Tournament. That is exactly what the Spanish Fork based Utah Flash seventh grade team did March 26, 2008' at the Open Court gym in Lehi, after de- feating the undefeated Alta Hawks, 49-34. The Flash, who are sponsored by the NBA Development League Utah Flash, competed well in the sixteen team tournament. After finishing the regular season with a 6-2 record, the young Flash team was geared for the tournament as the third seed in the tournament. The Flash made light work of the Pleasant Grove Magic in the first round of the tournament and then met the American Fork Cavemen in the semi-finals. The Cavemen had defeated the Flash earlier in the season, but the Flash were able to rally and knock off American Fork. After a hard fought victory over the Cavemen in the semi's, the Flash met the 8-0 Alta Hawks, who hadn't lost a game in over two seasons, in the championship game. After trailing 13—3 to start the game, the Flash rallied back to knock off the top-seeded Hawks and walk away with the tournament championship. sxmibsorilbe t o Tayler Mountford / Spanish Fork News USING YOUR HEAD: George Chacon heads the ball in the midst of Pleasant Grove defenders. The 400m also saw Brett Howell post points for the Dons with a time of 51.84. In a move that could have been the difference in the meet, the coaches decided to put together a strong 4x400 relay team so that they could get some points in that event. Coach Boyack and Kovatch made a good move as the team of Chris Norris, Tucker Pinder, Brett Howell and Jason Anderson took third place in the finals and picked up six points for the team. Their time of 3:27.93 was also good enough to qualify for the state meet. Not bad for a team that had never ran the event together. The boys in the field events also had some strong performances. Spencer Fausett continued to throw well as he took the Javelin title with a throw of 179'.. The Dons took four out of the eight places in the Javelin with Brett Howell in second (160'3.5"), Mitch McMullin fifth (152'8") and Brandon Wilding seventh (140*3"). The Javelin event alone netted 24 points for the team. Brandon Wilding was not done as he went on to take second in the Discus (127'9").TevitaViatohialso placed in the Discus with a throw of (107'6"). The relay teams also scored points for the boys with the before mentioned 4x400m taking third (3:27.93), the 4x100 taking fourth (44.72) and the medley relay placing second (3:42.87).
