Show -NEWS- B6 • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2007 Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Rees Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News SAFETY FIRST: Students at Rees Elementary participated in Safety Week, Sept. 17-21. Events included safety belt day — to remind kids to buckle up, mismatched shoe day — to remind kids to watch their step, and twin day — to remind kids to buddy up. On Thursday, Sept. 20, students wore green and walked to school to practice pedestrian safety. As an added bonus, UVSC's Wolverine, below, visited the school and acted as honorary crossing guard, above left. Above right, third grade teacher Carrie Foster takes a turn as crossing guard. The event was organized by PTA members Sage Baugh, Claudia Vest and Karen Caldwell. Mt. Loafer THE VOTES ARE IN: Students at Mt. Loafer Elementary School have selected Jocelyn Baker as their new student council president. Walker VanTassell was chosen to be the vice president, and Will Ford will be the secretary. Council members are Breanna AHdredge, James Carrington and Emma Ewell. As part of their campaign, these students wrote an essay explaining why they would be good council members, completed five hours of community ser vice and had a teacher evaluation. Also pictured here are Principal Jeanne Baadsgaard and Council Director Aubrey Bushman, who will be working with this fine group of students. DADS AND DONUTS: Mt. Loafer Elementary students had a fun fall morning reading with their dads at Dads and Donuts. Many dads showed up early with their children and a good book. They enjoyed reading in the library, classrooms and even the hallways. Above, the Ewell Family enjoys a good book in the library. We appreciate the dads who came and the PTA who sponsored this fun event. Larsen Riverview FIDDLER ON THE STAGE: Larsen Elementary had the opportunity to watch and learn from Russian Violinist, Valeri Glava. Mr. Glava shared stories and music from his culture as well as Introduced the', students to a variety of instruments and their individual sounds. Valeri had the students and teachers on their feet moving and dancing as well as singing along. Courtesy photos Courtesy photo Courtesy photo REACH FOR GOLD: Students and Faculty at Riverview Elementary have joined the pursuit for gold as part of the Gold Medal Schools Program. The Gold Medal Schools Program encourages physical activity and making healthy food choices. Students and teachers kicked things off with an assembly and a school-wide mile walk around the playground. As part of participation in the program, students are encouraged to walk a mile everyday and record their distance with their teacher. The distances of all students wilt be kept as a school-wide tally. Students can also include other physical activities such as dancing, biking, and soccer to count toward the miles. Riverview's goal is to reach the .moon by May!
