Show 26 FIESTA DAYS 2007 Women Working for Women host Pie Contest Christy Hardman STAFF WRITER The Pie Baking Contest has long been a tradition at the Saturday celebration of Fiesta Days. The people of Spanish Fork can boast of a lot of good things, and among them is the ability to make some pretty good pies. Just ask the judges from last year's pie baking contest. According to the contest hosts, Women Working for Women, the judges for the 2007 contest will be much the same as last year. Julie Anderson of Outer Beauty said that they are hoping to have the same judges this year, including James Fillmore of Hickory Kist. Anderson said they try to secure a wide variety of judges both professional and private, and she said that they pretty much agreed on which j)ies took the prize. Last year the pie baking contest was broken up into many different categories such as cream pies, fruit pies and refrigerator pies. Alicia Norris, Fiesta Days Chairman, said this year they are simplifying the categories because the judging got so involved last year. There were 47 entries in 2006, and the judging jut took too long. The 2007 pie baking contest will have three different categories to enter, the women's division, men's, or children under 18. Anderson said last year entire families entered in the different categories, and one family walked away with a few prizes. Norris said that basically the judges look at how the pie looks, how it feels (i.e. the flakiness of the crust etc.), originality, and of course, how it tastes. This is only the second year that the Women Working for Women organization has only been over the Pie Baking Contest. "They approached me about doing a dunking booth, and normally the city charges for the space for that," Norris said, "but they were doing it entirely for charity, so I told them if they would be willing to take on the pie baking contest, I would give them the space for free.1* Norris said they used to open the pies up for the public to taste, but they have since discontinued that. "It was not very effective because no one had very good manners," she said. "This year we'll just have them take their pies home after the judging." Because of complications in the past, late entries will not be accepted. The entry form is due Wednesday, July 18 to the city offices, but Anderson said if someone wasn't able to pick up a form, she would be happy to deliver it. The pies have to be dropped off behind the library by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 21 to be judged. To win a prize, you have to be present at 10 a.m. when the winners will be announced.
