Show SPANISH FORK NEWS Grand Marshals Marilyn Nielson STAFF WRITER Two Spanish Fork natives, Dale and Ila Mae Barney, are Grand Marshals for Fiesta Days this year. The two met at Spanish Fork High School after Ila Mae moved to Spanish Fork from Provo, and over the decades, their partnership has encompassed travels, politics, family life and everything in between. Dale Barney served in the military for two years after graduating from high school. When he returned home in 1959, he founded Barney, Inc., a construction company based in Spanish Fork. Through the years he and Ila Mae had six children and later served an LDS mission to Great Britain. When Dale retired, after a long life of education in what he calls "the school of hard knocks," Dale and Ila Mae were ready fora well-deserved rest. Instead, a neighbor came to him with an interesting proposal. "My neighbor said to me, 'You're retired. Dale, and nobody is running against the former mayor in the elections,'" Dale said. After some persuasion, Dale agreed to run in the mayoral race, and thus began his career in politics. With no previous political experience, Dale won the mayoral election and began to serve as mayor in 1997. During the eight years he served as Spanish Fork mayor, Dale cites his proudest accomplishments as "the sports complex" and "having 24 grandkids." Clearly, the Barneys' family is the most important part of their life. And now that Dale's terms in office have ended, he still keeps busy working on his ranch in Spanish Fork Canyon. "The ranch is basically my work and my hobby right now," Dale said. *i spend a lot of time up there, just working-on the creek, spraying weeds, things like that." The Barneys enjoy holding their family reunions and other gatherings at the ranch as well. And it's obvious that, now "retired" for the second time. Dale Barney isn't slowing down a bit.
