The truth, however, is that there are scholarships out there for everyone, including continuing students. Continuing students have many scholarship opportunities. There are a few simple things any student can do to find out whether or not they might qualify for a scholarship. Getting a scholarship as a continuing student is easy. One only need to begin by filling out the application, checking status online or in the scholarship office of which scholarships are available and making sure you meet the qualifications listed to receive the scholarship. The first step to any process to be considered as a recipient is to apply. For scholarships the application process is simple. The application can be accessed through UVlink. There are a lot of scholarship opportunities available. Some of them include Dean's Merit, Exceptional Performance, Leadership, Need-Based and a host of privately-funded scholarships. Each scholarship as a set of qualifications which must be met to receive the funding; these qualifications can be found by searching the scholarship website. "Most of the Dean's Merit and privately-funded scholarships are awarded to continuing students," said Carla Morgan, the scholarship manager. "The availability for continuing students is fairly decent." There is also a new privately-funded scholarship this year called the Huntsman scholarship, which requires a 3.0 GPA, financial need, a current FAFSA application and the student must display leadership, talent or academic ability while having a background of working while attending school. This scholarship is a $5,000 award for the academic year. Students concerned about applying for scholarships or who need help find the application should come to the scholarship office located in the Administration Building or visit uvsc.edu/ finaid/scholarships Representing roughly 400 faculty members, the UVSC faculty senate gives full-time and salaried professors a say in the creation and implementation of institutional policies. UVSC's President of the Faculty Senate Steven Clark (associate professor of behavioral science) explained the purpose of the faculty senate. "In higher education you have a construct called 'shared government' which is different from a corporation or the military," said Clark. 'That means that all the different constituencies should have a say. For students, they can effect policy change through ASUVSC. There's an Adjunct Council which represent the adjunct professors we have on campus. PACE represents UVSC's staff. And the faculty senate represents our full-time salaried professors. We all sit on the president's council with UVSC's adminis- tration." The president of faculty senate meets with UVSC's vice president of academic affairs once a week, providing a further link between faculty and administration. As the office of the vice president of academic affairs is the most direct link between the faculty and administration, Clark said the senate is currently very concerned with the process of finding and selecting a new vice president of academic affairs (VPAA), following Brad Cook's, former vice president of academic affairs' departure last year. Clark said the faculty senate has held meetings since Cooke's departure to solicit faculty feedback on the hiring of a new VPAA. According to Clark, by and large, "Faculty seem to want someone who believes firmly in shared governance, someone who will help build the academic programs here on campus, and a leader here on campus and within Utah's System of Higher mittees which deal with Education." everything from allocating Clark explained further travel funds to professors that the newer academic traveling abroad to dealing departments on campus with school-wide and indiwould benefit from both vidual departmental tenure departmental and admin- and promotion policies. istrative fostering.
