Show yourheoHh MONDAY* NOVEMBER 14*2005 How to manage the final month of the semester Pete Walters and John Lee Special Section Editor/Writer Kevin is a junior at UVSC. For just over three years he's been taking his usual 12 to 18 credits per semester. He works two jobs, is active in one club and still finds time to practice weekly with his band. In another year, if all goes well, he'll have . his bachelors in business and will be placing himself in the job market in search of a related career. But all is not going well. Something this semester has gone terribly wrong. What used to be a full but manageable schedule has turned into a • constant hodgepodge of mental exertion, which has taken its toll on Kevin's brain, his personal life and his GPA. At first Kevin just missed a few classes. 'I'll make it up later,' he thought. But work and other demands kept him from his study time, forcing him to stay up late. Now his homework is only half as good as it should be, and when he does manage to make it to his two early morning classes, he's only half present. Now, with only one month left to go in the semester, Kevin finds that he's on the failing end of two-thirds of his classes. In order to make up for the loss, Kevin trades even more sleep for study time, and the cycle perpetually descends. To make matters even worse, Kevin is now losing his shortterm memory. When he wakes up in the morning it takes several minutes for him to remember what day it is. By the end of the day, clci//ified/ • 863-8688 Enjoy Helping Seniors? This late into the semester, Kevin feels that if something doesn't change, he'll fail all of his classes as he gets further and further behind trying to make up for lost time. According to UVSC professor John Lee, "There are a few things I want to tell you about stress. First is that you will not go crazy if you have stress, because as long as you can brush your teeth, wash face, and get up, you are okay." "The second thing is that the most successful people are the busiest people, but the key is they are very organized. That's why we give them the most important jobs, because they know how to handle it." Below are professor Lee's suggestions for keeping your physical and mental stress in check: Physical Energy Take care of your body first, because it is what carries you to where you need to go. A good amount of fruits, vegetables and honey can increase your energy level. Lecithin and flaxseed oil sometimes work as well. Apples are my favorite source of energy. Avoid junk food such as candy, pastries, chips, ice cream and popcorn. Mental Energy B12 vitamins, fish and legumes (such as peanuts) increase mental energy. Fatigue Deep breaths, a massage or sometimes a hot bath will stimulate the senses. A walk through nature is a nice break. Music, both soft and hard, alternates the senses. Listen to soft or yin music, followed by yang or hard music. Physical Pain Massages, stretching and heat packs help alleviate pain, as does mental relaxation. Focus on relaxing the pain. Dullness of Mind Quiet meditation, concentration on one point or altering the visualization speed of the mind can keep your mind sharp. Cold water on the face helps keep you alert. Time Keeping a schedule, using note cards, setting goals and multitasking helps free up time. Listen to lecture notes in the car, for example. Attitude Beware of "excuse-itis," but also have balance. I have found it is better not to complain about a lack of time, because it only makes it worse. Deep relaxation with positive mental visualization helps. 2bdl&l/4b$630CA, W/D hkups, vaulted ceilings, walk-in closets, bball court, pool, covered parking call 361-9166 or 592-7892.
