T This Thursday will mark the opening night of Synergy Dance Live in the Ragan Theater. This contemporary dance concert will feature unique, new choreography by UVSC students as well as faculty and guest artists. Synergy Dance was formed in 1993 because of student demand for a UVSC modern dance company, and is directed by Kathie Debenham and Amy Markgraf. The company choreographs and performs an entirely new show every semester at UVSC and also travels to other local schools to perform. They also look forward every spring to the American College Dance Festival held in various cities around the United States. This spring they will travel to Laramie, WY to receive professional adjudication, along with dance companies from all over the country. Synergy Dance is an audition-based troupe with 22 current members. Master teachers and choreographers are also invited, from all over the country, to give UVSC dancers a broad and multifaceted learning experience. The Synergy dancers are required to participate in numerous dance technique classes as well as the six hours the company meets together on a weekly basis. Because dance is a brand new four-year program at UVSC, many students will have the opportunities to focus on their talents and become professional dancers. "Even though Synergy has always required a high level of dancing, we are starting to see greater depth and refinement in our dancers because of the upper division work in the four-year dance program," Debenham said. The concert Synergy Dance Live will certainly reflect that high-level of dancing and innovation. UVSC differs from other schools of dance by giving all dance students the chance to perform, not just juniors and seniors. "Even freshman can have the opportunity to choreograph, costume and light their own pieces; to express their unique voice," said Amy Markgraf. Synergy Dance Live will display this vivid spec- trum of individual student artistry through dance. Contemporary dance has the unique ability to deal with the human body in ways that are completely out of the ordinary. There is a highlevel of experimentation to be expected from Synergy Dance Live. liIn this concert, students are allowed to comment on the human condition, to form their views of the world through the medium of the human body," Debenham said. Plan on attending this one-of-a-kind concert this weekend, Nov. 17-19. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theater and the cost is $6 for students and $7 for general admission. As Kathie Debenham said, "Come and allow yourself and all your senses to be completely alive. Feel a sense of renewal in your own body that is achieved vicariously through the dancer's bodies." Tickets can be purchased at Campus Connection. For more information contact Kathie Debenham at 863-7129. Scripted by adjunct professor Christopher Clark, the musical is a "remix" of sorts, comprised of actual scenes from many of Shakespeare's 37 legendary plays. "Every word spoken in the play was written by Shakespeare," Clark said. "Expect to recognize lines from The Comedy of Errors, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and As You Like It." "Truthfully, we know very little about William Shakespeare's personal life," said theatre professor James Arrington. "This play is based on what we do know...the story of how he met and married his wife Anne Hathaway (out of 'necessity') at the age of eighteen." Actors Joel Petrie and Tanya Quinn play Shakespeare and Hathaway alongside a veteran cast of eight, including English Department Chair Jen Wahlquist. Student volunteers designed the set and costumes and UVSC student Stephen Driggs composed the music for the play. A Marrying Man is directed by talented-guest-artist David Morgan.
