Last week, Nov. 6-12, UVSC hosted its first "Global Awareness Week." According to the website for the International Student Council, "Over 600 international students from 87 different countries currently attend Utah Valley State College." Global Awareness Week, which is coordinated by the Office of International Affairs, is a combined attempt by student and faculty organizations school-wide to illuminate some of these cultures in a community and school frequently perceived as being homogenous. Bradley Cook. UVSC's vice-president of Academic Affairs, has been one of the leaders in UVSC's effort to promote an awareness of diversity on campus. Cook has described UVSC's global awareness mission in the past. "Global awareness at UVSC helps students identify themselves as part of a larger global community with complex technological, economic, political, ecological and cultural interdependencies," he said. This year's Global Awareness Week featured a wide variety of events, ranging from banquets to marches to lectures. On Monday, there was the parade of international costumes in the UVSC hallways held by the International Student Council. Monday also featured an international food cook-off in the ballroom. Tuesday featured the third annual Hunger Banquet in Chad Clark/NetXNews Deborah Palmieri, CEO and president of The Russian-American Chamber of Commerce spoke to students last week about relations between the two countries. the Ballroom. All of the proceeds were donated to Food and Care Coalition. Wednesday featured one of the feature events, a lecture from the Ambassador of Ethiopia, Kassahun Ayele, titled "Ethiopia and its Relations with the U.S." Ayele talked about some of the failures and successes relating to international efforts made by the United Slates. Wednesday also featured presentations regarding service and learning opportunities to Russia, Ghana, Mexico and Guatemala. Thursday featured an open international panel discussion, as well as another lecture, this one by Doctor Deborah Palmieri, CEO and president of The RussianAmerican Chamber of Commerce, in the Ragan Theater. The events save students a broad, varied perspective of many different cultures. In the past, UVSC has hosted "International Week," which featured some similar events. Student reactions to this year's global awareness events seemed to be very positive. "Overall, I found the events that I attended to be lively and informative," said Erin Winters, a sophomore student majoring in business. "I would like to see UVSC do more events like this on campus." For those students who missed the events this year and would like to know more about future events, or simply obtain information on UVSC's international programs, contact the Office of International Affairs at 8638897.
