F or the past 14 years Dr. Ron Smart has nurtured UVSC's Global Aviation program for a fledgling outfit to a worldclass player in the field of aviation education. ".. With students flying and studying out of the nearby Provo airport and many more taking courses online around the world, Smart's program is regarded by many as one of the most innovative in the aviation industry. ; -i ' : -:-,:•••' •''."-:~'.:'''. That is why aviation students were shocked when they heard the news last Monday that Smart was no longer with the program he founded. Officially, Smart's departure was voluntary but a contingent of students in the program feel that might not have been the case. "I think [Smart] got screwed," said Evan Hutchins, a senior aviation student when asked about Smart's sudden departure. "This is a guy who really cares about his program and the students in that , program and I don't think he was treated very well." According to administration, Smart's departure came after a discussion about the department being more academically accountable. A recent audit of the aviation department was said to have shown deficiencies in the communication between the department and the school. y Brad Cook, UVSC's vice-president for Academic affairs, sees the current situation with aviation as a bit of a double-edged sword. "[The aviation department] are clearly very entrepreneurial and innovative," Cook said. "We just needed them to insure us that the program, and in particular the online courses, were held to the same level of academic standards as in other program at UVSC.'l Those online c es thaufipoC mentions are H B v eompbneht t o ' ? the aviation department s growth in the last few years. According to Kelly, who is also an aspiring pilot in the aviation program, many local students also take advantage of the flexibility that the online courses provide. The curriculum found online is the brainchild of Rick Vin- cent, who until recently had been serving as assistant director under Smart in the aviation department.
