Every year computer companies promise to give the world on a fifteen inch monitor, and every year instead we receive software and hardware with mere echoes of the promised technology; when it runs at all. Media Mosaic is the first company to deliver what they promise and more, in the field of multi- media CD-ROM’s. 7 The CD “Mountain Biking” is a great way to introduce the novice to the techniques, mechanics, and excitement of the mountain biking world. The Mountain Bike CD is the best graphic and audio CD interface that I have seen so far. The installation was a seamless three key effort, that installed a video driver if your machine is not so equipped. We ran the CD on two Pentium 90 machines, both running Windows for Workgroups with 24 megabytes of RAM. One computer was equipped with four times CDROM, and the other was equipped with a two times CD-ROM. On the 4x machine the Mountain Bikes CD was flawless, quickly working through videos, music, and animation with reasonable speed. On the 2x machine the delay was noticeable, and annoying. The animation and sound would pause while the CD worked nonstop. The sounds were also different on the soundblaster equipped machine. The Turtle Beach equipped machine played a wider range of effects. The most exciting part of the Mountain Biking CDROM was seeing how far multi-media has come. Media Mosaic has produced a high quality CD that will help the beginning mountain biker navigate many of the mysteries of the sport. The Mountain Biking videos were interesting if not wildly exciting. The technical tips were probably perfect for the novice mountain biker. The CD would shorten the learning curve for the average mountain biker joining the sport. David Billstrom the CEO of media mosaic said “we found a large positive correlation between 25-35 year olds males with CD-ROM computers who are first time purchasers of mountain bikes.” If Mr. Billstrom follows this marketing theory, then we can eagerly await follow up CD’s on Rogaine and prostate cancer. I recommend this to any novice with a 4x CD-ROM driver. 97-CD-ROM.
