The names were based on applications by the Utah Geological Survey headed by WiP. Hewitt. lliam the Circle Gifts A mesa in area three miles of st Box Wagon Mesa was given the name Bitumen Mesa." The mesa d much sandstone. contains bitumen-saturate- ORANGE CUFFS formations in the Orange Cliffs area wore officially designated "Tar Cliff" ,Two and Fault Point. The Cliff, named for extensive seepages of tar which flow down the cliff face, is just south of Red Point and three miles north of the junction of Cove Canyon and Cataract Canyon in Lake Powell. Fault Point, named for a colorful cross section exposure of a fault, is two miles northwest of the junction of Cove Canyon and Cataract Canyon and is about three miles south of Tar Cliff. DETAILED MAPPING All three names came after detailed field mapping of sandstone deposits by the Utah Geological Survey headquartered at the University of Utah. " The names Tar Cliff and Fault Point had previously been used for newly discov-ere- d of deposits sandstone in an area called the Tar Sand Triangle in extreme northeastern Garfield County and adjoining Wayne County.
