EPA Okays Controls On Wastes (AP) Environmental Protection The WASHINGTON Agency has adopted regulations requiring municipal waste treatment plants to remove ht least 85 per cent of suspended solids and oxygenconsuming wastes from their discharges into the nation's waterways. The EPA regulations, signed Tuesday by acting administrator John J. Quarles Jr., define the secondary treatment" which municipalities must apply to waste discharges under federal antipollution laws. EPA applied the same set of standards to suspended solids as to oxygen biological demand: 65 percent removal, with set discharge limits. The agency also set a limit on the fecal cobfonm bacteria in municipal discharges. Establishment of the standards permits municipalities to plan new waste dispos.il systems in compliance with the federal hw and removes a bottleneck from the flow of federal grants to aid construction of waste treatment facilities.
