The three-day mountain retreat was available to all Hill families who wanted to participate and brought out 190 total participants, all of whom will be deploying or will have a family member deploy sometime in the next six months. "This is all about building and maintaining ^strong family relationships," said Tech. Sgt Ben TVevino, who works with the base chapel. "Relationships can strain under the stress of deployment, so what we try to do is bring these families together and get them away from all other distractions and just let them focus on each other." During the retreat families participate in activities such as horseback riding, hiking, boating and crafts, and attend coping seminars led by Hill chaplains. "A lot of other bases are trying to copy what we do," Trevino said. "But they don't have (this setting.) The atmosphere up here is so soothing and calming — it's perfect for what we are trying to do." Staff Sgt. Kevin Dilley is married with two young boys and three young girls and will deploy to an unknown location in January. Dilley just returned from a deployment in Balad, Iraq, last August. He participated in a retreat after he returned. "It's a great opportunity to get away, but (you) can also pick up some valuable advice," he said. "When I got home last time, my youngest daughter didn't even recognize me and you need to know how to deal with that, and you can learn some of that here." Dilley's wife, Tyrena, said the hardest part of her husband's last deployment was reintegrating him back into the day-today routine of family life. "Watching him leave is hardrtrat iThinlnfre-—" biggest re-adjustment is when he comes back home," she said. "It's like, you get into Tired of Renting? STOP paying your landlord's mortgage. Capt. Herman Norwood will deploy to Iraq in about six months, leaving behind his wife, Shamona, an infant son and an 8-year-old daughter. "This will be my third deployment, but it's always tough to leave your family," Norwood said. "This weekend just gives us a chance to solidify all the bonds we've already made and look at some goals we've set for when I'm gone."
